Ratatat, Ratatat | “I definitely listened to this one a whole lot when I was younger. I always loved the song “Cherry”—it has these awesome, layered guitar tones that filter in and out. A lot of their techniques were super inspirational to me when I was first learning how to produce. If you listen to my first solo album Mirror Stage, you’ll definitely hear a lot of reversed guitars and drums.”
Postal Service, Give Up | “This album was definitely on repeat for a good chunk of my high school days. It always really resonated with me for some reason. Dntel, the guy that made all the beats is probably one of my favorite musicians. Listening to it at this point I am still super inspired by his production. I love his subtle production style… his songs always feel very earnest to me.”

The Beatles, Love | This album showed me how creative and interesting production can be. And I think I prefer the version of “Strawberry Fields” on this than to the original—it’s a bit more raw and charming.
I remember studying the seamless transitions, the blending of disparate elements, and the overall structure of the album. It felt more like a film with scenes than a traditional album, and I enjoyed that a lot and it greatly shaped how I approach creating an album, particularly in my early days when I first started writing and arranging songs on DAWs.
Quasimoto, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas | This album is so loose, in the best possible way. Everything is ephemeral and the songs and skits slip in and out of each other and the album is super free and exists on its own terms. Up until that time, most electronic music I had heard tended to be really stiff and quantized, but listening to this album inspired me to stretch my legs a bit and to make electronic music that has an organic quality that can only come from making music with your hands.
It also influenced how I approach writing music on samplers and filled me with an urge me to move away from DAWs (although these days I’m slipping back into them).
Panda Bear, Young Prayer | It’s seldom that artists of any field achieve what Panda Bear did on this record, which is to make something that is conceptually interesting, viscerally beautiful, sincere, and void of pretense, heavy yet light, and completely nourishing to the human soul.
It’s not something you play everyday, and in truth it’s hard for me to listen to the record. It’s too intense and pure for my brain to digest without wanting to explode.
Young Prayer taught me how much you can do with very little. The negative space in the record is as important as the voice and the guitar (which are gorgeous). The production embellishments are very subtle and tasteful, and I appreciate how their deliberate execution bolstered the ebbs and flows of the songs. And the songwriting is so simple, patient and organic—qualities that I aspire to have as a creative person.”
