The TVD Record Store Club for 11/20/15

Welcome to the TVD Record Store Club for the week ending 11/20/15.

The TVD Record Store Club is another free feature we’ve added to The TVD Record Store Locator App that recently relaunched refreshed and rebranded. The Club points to a record store agenda that we’re assembling for your weekend now that new release vinyl lands in stores on Fridays—AND for the early part of the week coming when those mom and pops could use the foot traffic.

Every Thursday we’ll be tipping you off right here at TVD—and within the app at the Club tab—to releases of merit newly on store shelves, along with in-store ticket giveaways you can win by simply waving the app, pricing incentives, contests, cool partner initiatives, and a host of surprises we’re looking forward to putting in your pocket on the regular.

This week for your pre-holiday shopping, the Grateful Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” shows land on vinyl, Mountain’s Leslie West returns to the racks, a 2-fer reissue from M83, and more Led Zep on vinyl? Right on. (Plus, we have the skinny on some cool incentives to light a fire under you.)

Grateful Dead, Fare Thee Well | In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Grateful Dead, the “core four” original members—Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir—reunited at Chicago’s Soldier Field on 4th of July weekend for one of the most anticipated concert events in recent history. Joined by Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti, and Bruce Hornsby, Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead is the original members’ last-ever performance together nearly 20 years to the day of the last ever Grateful Dead concert with Jerry Garcia, which took place at the same historic venue.

Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead 2-CD “Best Of” Version contains audio highlights from all three shows.

Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead 2-DVD Version contains full video from final show (July 5) on DVD.

In celebration of this landmark release, the stores listed below will have Grateful Dead kites as a gift with purchase. Some shops will have them this weekend and others into next week, so call ahead to confirm yours!

Leslie West, Soundcheck | Soundcheck is the sixteenth solo album by legendary rock guitarist Leslie West. It follows 2013’s critically acclaimed Still Climbing. For this new release, Leslie lays down some of his most inspired musical magic to date with the assistance of true rock royalty: the renown British guitarists Peter Frampton and Brian May, ex-Jeff Beck keyboard virtuoso Max Middleton, vocalist extraordinaire Bonnie Bramlett, and the late great Cream bassist and longtime friend of Leslie’s, Jack Bruce.

Extremely limited autographed posters as a gift-with-purchase while supplies last are available this weekend from the stores below.

M83, Digital Shades Vol 1 | Digital Shades Vol 1 is the fourth studio album by M83. The mostly instrumental album was originally released on Mute in 2007, and features only founding member Anthony Gonzalez. M83 has since gone on to release the Grammy award nominated album, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming (2011), score the soundtrack for the 2013 motion picture Oblivion, and his songs have been featured in countless movies and TV shows.

M83, Saturdays = Youth | Saturdays = Youth is the fifth studio album by M83 produced by Ken Thomas, (Sigur Rós and the Cocteau Twins) with co-production by Ewan Pearson (Tracey Thorn, The Rapture, and Ladytron) and M83’s Anthony Gonzalez. The album was originally released on Mute in 2008 to widespread critical acclaim including an 8.5 “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, and being named album of the year by Urban Outfitters and Drowned in Sound. “Kim & Jessie” one of the singles off this album, was also placed at #256 on Pitchfork’s list of The Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s.

Led Zeppelin, Mothership | In 1968, John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant formed Led Zeppelin, one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music. The band has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide with a celebrated catalog including such landmark songs as “Whole Lotta Love,” “Kashmir,” “Rock And Roll,” “When The Levee Breaks” and “Stairway To Heaven.”

The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Page brought in Plant, Bonham, and Jones to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest rock band in the world.

Led Zeppelin continues to be honored for its pivotal role in music history. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and a year later was awarded with the Polar Music Prize in Stockholm. Founding members Jones, Page, and Plant—along with Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham—took the stage at London’s O2 Arena in 2007 to headline a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, a dear friend and Atlantic Records’ founder.

The band was honored for its lifetime contribution to American culture at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. In January of 2014, the band won their first ever Grammy award as Celebration Day, which captured their live performance at the Ertegun tribute concert, was named Best Rock Album.

The TVD review of Led Zeppelin’s Mothership is here.
