TVD Vinyl Giveaway: The Serenades, “Come Home” 7″

Other than producing the prestigious Nobel prize, the disco mastery of ABBA, and the cooking genius that is the Muppets’ Swedish Chef, Sweden is known for producing quite a few things you might take for granted. One of more recent efforts to show off how sweet the Swedish can be is the dynamic duo Serenades.

Coming out of the ever-busy Shout Out LoudsAdam Olenius has teamed up with Markus Krunegard to deliver some of the tastiest pop phenomenon since coke switched back to its classic formula. This two-man megaband offers their music garnished with ’80s references and heavy emoting.

What’s that? You love their newest single “Come Home” as much as we do? Well, great! We have a 7” vinyl single to give away and are dying for you to get your hands on it!

Grimey’s “Gift Up” Program

The holidays are over and you’ve probably got a few gift cards lying around that you can’t see yourself using in the near future. Yes, the $25 to Best Buy from your uncle was a nice thought, but it’s not going to put as much as a nibble in that iPad price tag. Sigh.

Grimey’s “Gift Up” program might be the way to get more bang for your buck. Bring in your unused corporate gift cards, and they’ll give you a store credit for the amount of the card. The fine print: the card must be from a chain that sells music in physical formats and can not be a retailer that is going out-of-business. The amount on the card must be verifiable by phone or internet and cannot expire within six months.

David Ullman:
The TVD Interview

Northeastern Ohio native David Ullman is trying like hell to release his next album on vinyl. “I’m hardwired to write, perform, record and release music,” says Ullman in his RocketHub video. “For me, if you’re going to release music in this day and age of digital downloads, that’s not real to me. Music on this [holds up MP3 player] is not as real as this [holds up a 12”]. We have relationships with the records we love. By putting out a vinyl record, I can connect with people that appreciate vinyl records.”

Here’s the TVD exclusive on David’s “first albums,” why he chose to partner with RocketHub to fuel his vinyl dream, and his thoughts on the lineup for this evening’s Beachland Ballroom & Tavern show that will serve as the last big push towards funding his album.

How long have you been making music?

I guess I first started making music when I was 7 or 8 and off and on since then. But since 2004 or 2005, I’ve started playing out under my own name.

Spinning: Evan Voytas,
Feel Me

LA singer-songwriter Evan Voytas, known for his pop synth beats and mysteriously comforting vocals, debuted his new EP Feel Me on Dovecote Records this past Tuesday.

A stand out in the local music scene, Voytas’ resume also includes a stint in Flying Lotus and Gonjasufi.

As we inch closer to his next release and we remember the songs that won over our hearts – “I Took A Trip On A Plane” and “We’ll Go Far,” it’s hard not to get antsy awaiting the new music, especially since it’s on vinyl. To get you ready for it, you can download new track “You Don’t Even Know Where It’s At” right now.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Bryan Scary at (Le) Poisson Rouge, 1/28

Brooklyn’s Bryan Scary has been around since his first release in 2006. I caught on to him and his band, the Shredding Tears, in 2008 when they released the second album, Flight of the Knife.

I was immediately taken by the upbeat, hooky style that was like ELO meets Alice Cooper meets Beatles meets Ween. Uh, yeah, that’s some good company! Have a listen to “Imitation of the Sky” from Flight of the Knife…

Bryan Scary’s new one, Daffy’s Elixir, will be released on April 3rd on Paper Garden Records. And to celebrate that new release, we are giving away a pair of tickets to Bryan Scary’s (le) poisson rouge show on Saturday! And as someone who has seen this band live, I will have you know that they can amazingly nail all of this music’s intricacy, beauty and energy in a live setting.

Lightfoot: The Vinyl District Showcase Week Enter to win tix & vinyl!

We’ve been in this racket long enough to know that it’s not every day a band or artist attains the lofty ambition of releasing their first single on vinyl, not to mention it arriving in tandem with said artist’s first full EP. Washington, DC’s Jessica Louise Dye, or Lightfoot, is the exception to that rule.

Lightfoot’s 7″ single and EP, Scarlet Sails is available this week, and as such, DC’s Black Cat is hosting a release party this Friday night, January 27th. Joining Jess on the bill are Loose Lips, Ugly Purple Sweater, and Paperhaus—all of whom we’ve cornered this week for a chat about records in anticipation of Friday night’s event.

In addition, Lightfoot has given TVD a pair of tickets to Friday’s release party and a copy of the new 7″ to give away to one commenter to this post or the remaining ones throughout this week. Just let us know in the comments why you want to be in attendance Friday night – and why – and the most convincing of the commenters gets the single and two tickets.

If you missed our initial installment, we chatted with Loose Lips yesterday, and today we’ve got a few words with Alex Tebeleff of Paperhaus.

What was the first vinyl record you ever listened to?

The first record I ever listened to was Elton John’s Greatest Hits. I can remember being a little kid and dancing around in my living room to “Crocodile Rock.” That might actually be the first musical memory I have. Luckily my parents saved most of their vinyl, so my first experiences that I can remember actively listening to music were on vinyl records.

Vinyl Vision at
The Vinyl District

Vinyl Vision is an original weekly series at TVD produced by AmusicChannel.tv.

Tucked away amongst the dusty bars and cloudy shop windows of Oklahoma City’s Classen Circle, Charlie Nicholson of Charlie’s Jazz, Blues and R&B Records keeps his passion for music.

In an era where vinyl has made its comeback on indie records and alternative rock, Charlie’s has sold nothing but the classics of jazz, blues and R&B for years now, and his passion for the music shines through his personality.

Brown Brogues’ new
7″ “Anyone But You”
and Live Dates

In 2011 Brown Brogues toured with The Kills and played SXSW and now the lo-fi garage twosome from Wigan return with their new 7″ via London label Italian Beach Babes.

The video for the lead track, ‘Anyone But You‘ was directed by Manchester’s Plastic Zoo and was shot as an homage to long forgotten family holidays on an ancient VHS Camera.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: Grieves’ Together Apart

Lately, it has been hard to remember that it is in fact winter in Colorado. Jackets are light, and the snow has been lighter, and this January has turned your favorite slope into the world’s longest water slide. While the elusive snow may inhibit some crucial downtime on the slopes, it definitely will make for a more pleasant outdoor experience at Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks.

This is the first winter concert in Red Rocks’ history, featuring Grieves & Budo, Atmosphere, and Common, this Friday, January 27th, at Red Rocks Ampitheater, so at least for this week, I am rooting for the warm weather.

Wrap up warm, and Grieves’ chill beats will help defrost your dancing shoes. Colorado native Benjamin Laub (aka Grieves) is a lyrical talent to watch; his music is derived from real pain and experience that bring the words and the emotion to life. He paired up with Budo in 2008, and they have been supplying a steady dose of hypnotic flow with multi-instrumental rhythms and intensified lyrical narratives. The duo is joining the likes of T-Pain and Gym Class Heros for the 2012 SnowStorm Music Tour starting in February, but you have the chance to see them first at Red Rocks.

Imperial China will be releasing their third album How We Connect on Saturday, the same day as the showcase. It’s available on vinyl and CD at the show, where you can meet Brian Porter of the band and discuss his love of electronic music and vinyl with him, as he did with us.

Memphis Music Club: Brandon Thornburg
of ELECTROCITY and Voodoo Village

Growing up in Memphis as a kid bent on electronic music is a little like growing up in Alaska with a taste for durian fruit—no one finds reason to have distaste towards you for your preference, it’s just so outside of the norm that it becomes easy to feel alienated.

Although I figured I’d have to move away from the Mid-south to get knee deep in a conversation about all that clicks, ticks, glitches, and goes “bump” in the night, I was more than pleasantly surprised when I sat down with a pivotal figure in the Memphis electronic scene, Brandon Thornburg. Thornburg has played an integral role in the development of electronic music in Memphis over the past few years.

TVD Recommends:
Los Campesinos! at Beachland Ballroom, tonight!

Cleveland’s Beachland Ballroom & Tavern invites all of us to hop on and ride the wave of indie pop goodness with Welsh rockers Los Campesinos!

It must be nice living in Cardiff. Home to the world’s oldest record shop (Spillers Records opened in 1894. Cardiff wasn’t even an official city until 1905!) and one of the best rock scenes out there (Lostprophets, Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral For A Friend, Kids in Glass Houses, and The Automatic to name a few), the City of Arcades has recently bequeathed upon us one more gem: Los Campesinos!

With a name that literally translates to “The Peasants,” a sound that is an indie pop band musically reverting back to childhood, and an insistence that all band members make their surname Campesinos!, this 7-piece upstart is destined for big things around the world with their energetic shows and lively, joyous music.

Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder added to Jazz Fest lineup

It has become part of the mystique of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival whether the organizers plan it or not. For the last several years, pundits have had the opportunity to speculate who will be added to fill the “TBA” slots on the schedule.

This year, the two major acts, both planning tours to support new albums, will be gracing the infield of the New Orleans Fairgrounds.

Springsteen, who will be performing with his iconic E Street Band, is scheduled for the first Sunday, April 29. Vedder will leave Pearl Jam at home and play with his ukulele (really!) and a guitarist on Thursday, May 3.
