Those Darlins’ Pre-Release Exclusives

Grimey’s Record Store is throwing an exclusive pre-release show on Sat, March 12th for Those Darlins’ forthcoming album Screws Get Loose. You have to pre-order the CD or vinyl at Grimey’s in order to be admitted to the show which takes place at The Basement (underneath their store.) That’s the only way you get in.

Upon pre-order, folks will also receive a commemorative silk-screen mini-poster (see above) made by Grand Palace Silkscreen.
So go support Grimeys and Those Darlins and pre-order now and get the new record, a limited edition mini-poster, and an exclusive show all for the price of a single live show. The Basement ain’t huge, so pre-order now to ensure attendance.

Denney and the Jets and D. Watusi will open the show that night, March 12th. Doors at 8pm, The Basement, Nashville.

United Record Pressing Goes to SXSW

Nashville’s own vinyl pressing plant, URP, is heading down to SXSW to do their yearly panel and they are doing some exciting promotions as well. URP’s Jay Millar will be speaking on the panel Vinyl Records 3.0 Challenges and Rewards” on Saturday March 19th at the Austin Convention Center. (Room 16B, panel begins at 11am)

While you are at the panel make sure you look for one of 1000 4.75″ vinyl records that will be given away at this and other as-of-yet unnamed locations during SXSW.

Every record contains Shredder from the upcoming Jeff the Brotherhood LP We Are the Champions followed by some sort of “announcement” from the band. If that doesn’t make you want to get your hands on one then this will: ONE lucky record is a GOLDEN TICKET that will entitle the finder of said “golden ticket” to 500 free 7″s!!! If you want to be in the know about where these records will be hidden during SXSW you will need to follow United Record Pressing on Facebook or Twitter. While you’re at it go check out the great deals URP has on vinyl pressing.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – House Arrest /The Doldrums – Paw Tracks

B Lan 3 – Library Catalog Music Series – Asthmatic Kitty

B Lan 3 is a solo project by musician and visual artist Michael Diekmann. A resident of New York City, he also records and performs with the minimalist cold-wave formation Ike Yard, and the pioneering experimental hip-hop group Death Comet Crew. He has also composed soundtracks for video and multimedia installations for multimedia artists including Gretchen Bender, Robert Longo and Marcello Mazzellaand also contributed music with Death Comet Crew to the audio book version of “Neuromancer” by William Gibson.
The compositions on Music for Hunting and Mapping were developed with a focus on the mapping of an imaginary realm and were largely inspired by a consideration of a collision between high and low culture; specifically by exploring stylistic conceits from anime and video gaming while drawing upon “high art” examples from literature and cinema. For example, how would director Hayao Miyazaki interpret Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Mason & Dixon” as an anime film? Or, what would a single-player, RPG video game of director Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Andrei Rublev” look like? Or a multiplayer video game based on Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”? The strategies employed in composition and production imbue the recordings with sense of fantasy…or at least a synthetic version of reality, much in the same manner of more highly developed video games and anime. Nashville’s Dead THE FREAKIN’ WEEKEND!

This is a good weekend to love to rock and roll in Nashville because the guys over at Nashville’s Dead are hosting their annual Freakin’ Weekend! This mini-festival/party is three nights of great shows at various venues around town.

One of my favorite parts of this year’s festivities is the “pop-up” record shop at Local Honey. The pop-up shop has releases from Nashville’s Dead, Infinity Cat Recordings, Turbo Time Records, Third Man, Baby Don’t, Evil Weevil, & Velocity of Sound. They will also be selling limited edition posters made by Boss Construction. The best part is that the shop is OPEN NOW! You need to head over to 2009 Belmont Blvd and pick up some sweet wax today so that you can listen to them while you pre-game for the awesome shows you will see this weekend. (the record shop will be open Thursday through Saturday)

Giving Back Is The New Black

Chances are you know someone whose life has been affected by cancer. Half of all men and one-third of all women in the US will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Unfortunately, the age of people being diagnosed with cancer seems to be dropping, meaning more and more people under the age of 40 are diagnosed every day.

I was diagnosed a year ago at the age of 31 with breast cancer. After a year of treatments and medications (which will continue for the next two years) I am cancer free! But I wouldn’t have made it through the ordeal without the support of the Nashville music community, many of whom worked tirelessly to put on benefit shows and make baked goods to help me pay the insane amount of medical bills that began to accumulate (My insurance provider began my cancer year by denying a claim for the surgery that resulted in my diagnosis… cha-ching!). The love even continues into this year as Jeffery Drag Records and Pujol have released a benefit 45 for Jeremy and myself to help pay for the medical bills that continue to roll in.

The reason that I am sharing my story with you now is because I want to encourage as many people as possible to attend the “I’m Still Beautiful” concert and fashion show on Thursday, March 3rd at The Mercy Lounge. This is the third annual event to be put on by Giving Back is the New Black to support young cancer survivors. It’s going to be a great show with music from Holley MaherRun With BullsKopecky Family Band, and, one of my hero bands, The Features, who is always willing to donate their time to help people in need.

I’m really looking forward to this one and I hope to see you there. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 7pm

Free Rock the Block On Elliston Place

It seems like it’s been awhile since there has been one of these festival-esque shows down on Elliston Place (or maybe I’ve been living under a rock which is more likely). In any case, tonight, Tuesday, February 22nd, The End and The Exit/In are hosting a free night of Nashville rock’n’roll. Please click the links below to sample some of the wares of these talented musicians. I know that listening to them definitely made me want to head over to Elliston Place tonight. My top pick at Exit/In is Evan P. Donahue. Top pick at The End would have to be Casa Castile. Support Live Music!
