TVD Ticket Giveaway: U.S. Royalty w/ Birdlips & True Womanhood at 9:30 Club, 7/29

I was thrilled to find out that DC’s own U.S. Royalty would be playing 9:30 Club this Friday (7/29). So of course… I had to get you all some tickets to join in the fun. We have a pair of tickets to give away.

Charlottesville, VA’s Birdlips and DC’s True Womanhood are supporting, so it’s your chance to hear three great (relatively) local bands.

I could tell you for the 800th time about how U.S. Royalty has made all the Best Dressed lists, and I could compare them to Fleetwood Mac like everyone else again (no really, listen to “Monte Carlo” below, and you can’t deny this), but instead, I’m going to get a little sentimental for a moment.

Sometimes it’s difficult to separate music from the circumstances surrounding it. My love affair with this band began a few years ago, not in DC, but in NYC, where I first saw them play at the Studio at Webster Hall, a small space on the lower level of the colossal venue, where they opened for some (European?) band whose name I can’t remember.

Fast forward a few years, and I’ve seen them in three different cities, opening for progressively bigger and bigger bands, playing both Sweetlife Festivals, and DJing about town when they’re not on tour. They released their Midsommar EP, and then earlier this year, they released their debut full-length MIRRORS. They headlined the famed Schubas of Chicago. And now this. Headlining the 9:30 Club right here in DC! The boys are all growns up, and I watched it happen.

I think about all those good times when I’ve seen them play, all the friends, and the men, and the drinks, and I can’t separate anymore how I feel about this band and how I feel about those times, the happiness and the laughter and the dancing.

For a chance to win the tickets, give us a song from a band that has been the soundtrack to some of the best times in your life.

The winner will be chosen at noon on Friday (7/29) and has until 3PM to confirm the tickets via email for that night’s show.

P.S. After the USR show, if you (like me) plan to swing by the SoFar Sounds show at The Dunes, featuring a bunch of other DC bands including our friends in Ra Ra Rasputin, admission is reduced to $5 if you present your ticket from the U.S. Royalty show.
