Allan: The root of the Warchild cocktail started, like Warchild, here in Washington DC. In the late 1800s, some dude named Colonel Joe Rickey mixed bourbon, club soda, and the juice of half a lime. Gin was later added and became the preferred method of preparation.
We love cocktails, and we hate getting fat. A Gin Rickey was the obvious choice for the base of the Warchild Cocktail.
Rory: I lived out in San Francisco for a while and worked as a bartender; people drank Fernet Branca there like they drink Jameson here. When I was a 19 year-old bar back, the bartenders forced me to prove my spot by drinking an insane amount of Fernet. I passed out and got hooked on the magical elixer.
When Jessica at Room 11 suggested we combine the two drinks, I was amazed at her bartending prowess. She served us up a perfect Gin Rickey with a Fernet floater. Genius! You can stir it together and drink as one delicious flavor, or you can sip the Gin Rickey until you get to the floater, thus enjoying the Fernet as a digestif, as it was originally intended. The Italians would be proud as shit.
