Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
“The Lilliputians are men six inches in height but possessing all the pretension and self-importance of full-sized men. They are mean and nasty, vicious, morally corrupt, hypocritical and deceitful, jealous and envious, filled with greed and ingratitude — they are, in fact, completely human.”
Navigating the music business often feels like Gulliver’s Travels. This week, there hasn’t been a day that I haven’t felt tied down like Swift’s hero with “putians” (as I like to call them) pricking me with thorns and babbling one absurdity after another. At times it’s hard to ignore the state of the music biz but I’m forging forward toward like-minded people and artists who are too busy playing to get “tied down.”
This week’s playlist started a few weeks ago as a dumping zone for records I liked but hadn’t dropped on a previous show. A few bits from Mussel Shoals, an overlooked Bowie favorite, and odd and sod from 2015, a favorite Laura Marling song from 2013, and of course a grip of new releases highlighted by a song from the new Animal Collective.
March is the month for new releases, so here we come. Enjoy and stay dry.
