Show of the Week – Huey Lewis and the News @ Minglewood Hall 01/27/11

I first heard Huey Lewis & the News the way most people my age did: the film Back To The Future.

Their number one hit “Power of Love” proved to be the band’s ticket into my friends’ trust by simply being a song from one of the most nostalgic movies – of my generation – in the last 30 years.

Now fast forward a couple of decades to bring Huey and the guys even further into the fold, they’ve recorded and released a new record that was tracked and mixed at Ardent Studios where I work. Mr. Lewis, I’d say you’ve made your way into my heart through a series of random events.

Soulsville, as many of you know, was recorded here in Memphis because it is made up of entirely Memphis music. The all-covers record contains the News’ versions of 14 classic songs from the Stax library.

And now the band is touring on the new record and they’re bringin’ it back to us at Minglewood Hall on Thursday the 27th. I’ve never seen ’em live, but I hear their live show is where it’s at. Also, you can bring your ticket stub to the Stax Museum Jan 27th through July 31st and receive: two for one admission to the Stax Museum, a $20 autographed Huey Lewis and the News “Soulsville” CD for $15 (while supplies last), and a special price on an autographed Steve Roberts photo of Huey Lewis.

(Editor’s Note: We have since forgiven Mr. Lewis for not mentioning Memphis in his iconic song, “The Heart of Rock and Roll.” We’ll just blame that on him being on a “New Drug.”)
