Show of the Week: Grace Potter and Nocturnals @ Minglewood Hall 02/16/11

For the third time since their newest self-titled record was released halfway through last year, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals will be obliging us here in town at Minglewood. That record debuted at #20 on Billboard and they’ve been hittin’ the road hard since.

First off, this band sounds tough as all get out on the record. The band definitely hints to a rock and roll from the 60’s and 70’s, but they make it all their own. If you haven’t heard the record, go get it and enjoy the sexiest rock and roll performance on an album since I don’t know when. Sexy, without the trash.

And live, the band tears it up: electric guitars (played how they’re meant to be played) and Hammond organ screamin’ over a smooth but powerful rhythm section, featuring none other than one of my personal favorites, Catherine Popper on bass (ex-Cardinals). Grace’s vocals-keys-guitar performance, well, the Daily Times says it best: “…comes across on stage as a woman possessed – Lucinda Williams fronting the Black Crowes, or Janis Joplin if she’d cut a few albums with The Band…”

For real, go see this show. Here’s a video to entice you:

The show is Wednesday the 16th. Doors at 7, show at 8. Another great band Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights opens up.
