GRAMMY® GPS: A Roadmap for Today’s Music Biz

Presented by The Recording Academy® Memphis Chapter in conjunction with the Memphis Music Foundation’s Plug In Music Industry Expo 2011, GRAMMY® GPS is an all-day conference for independent artists, producers, labels and managers working in the music industry and will feature a keynote speech by Daniel Glass, founder of Glassnote Records, as well as educational panels and demonstration sessions that will offer attendees rare access to key music industry contacts while they learn valuable skills that can be used in the pursuit of a successful career. Panelists will include GRAMMY-winning producers, engineers, songwriters and music industry executives. Plug In Memphis: Indie Music Expo

The Memphis Music Foundation will present Plug-In Memphis: Indie Music Expo next week at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. The event is designed to connect local musicians and music industry service providers. The Plug-In Memphis Expo will be in conjunction with GRAMMY GPS, the Recording Academy’s professional development conference.

Bands, Bikes and Block Parties

Enjoy seven miles of fun as we celebrate the first birthday of the Shelby Farms Greenline with the second annual people-powered party. Live music, great food, and family fun.

The Breakfast Club: Artistic Expression with a Hip Hop soundtrack

Location: Revive Oxygen/Cereal/Energy Bar 1559 Madison Ave. (inside of Minglewood Entertainment Complex).

Departing from the late night, club-driven party scene and into the light of day; TBC focuses on presenting excellent talent in a great venue at a low cost to be enjoyed by the entire family. Revive is a warm, open, modern space featuring a full menu and the city’s only cereal/oxygen/energy bar. Guest DJ’s provide the sonic alchemy, mixing the best in Neo Hip.Hop and True School Hip.Hop while deliberately incorporating Memphis artists. TBC also features an artists’ marketplace for the month’s performers to provide info and/or merchandise to connect with the audience and build their support base.

Court Square Concert Series

Court Square Concert Series will have them dancing in the streets during the month of October. Come downtown and listen to great music to reenergize you for your work week ahead. Guest performers are 2 Mule Plow, Tennessee Mass Choir, Memphis Jones and Star & Micey. Each concert is free and open to the public. Blankets, picnic baskets, and coolers are encouraged.

16 over 48: the Memphis Demos
When: October 8 & 9. 8:00-9:00 pm; Midnight

16 Over 48 is an event developed by Ardent Studios with Memphis musicians in mind. The project will feature a series of 48 hour events allowing musicians to bring out their inner recording artist on state-of-the-art gear at a fraction of the normal cost. The debut event – The Memphis Demos – will begin at midnight on October 8, 2011. Participants in The Memphis Demos will record in Ardent’s renovated Studio C, outfitted with everything needed to make the best demos possible. A backline of drums and guitar and bass amps will be set up and ready to track through their new SSL Duality console. For 48 hours, 16 groups of musicians need only bring their instruments and voices to track in a ready-to-go environment with very little setup required. Experienced musicians of any genre and instrumentation are welcome. Each group will walk away with two CD copies of their performances, mixed on the fly.

Memphis the Musical

Broadway play, “Memphis: The Musical,” is set to begin its national tour in its namesake city when it plays at The Orpheum Theatre. The Tony Award winner for Best Musical is a fictionalized story of the birth of rock ’n’ roll radio in 1950s Memphis. It is loosely based on the life of WHBQ deejay Dewey Phillips.

Arts Pop Up: Frayser

Join Arts Memphis and nonprofit arts groups from across the community in Frayser for a day of art and activities! There will be main stage performances from numerous arts groups, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Plus, They’ll be distributing Arts Access cards (Arts Access is a free ticket program sponsored by Baptist Memorial Health Care and coordinated by Arts Memphis in partnership with over 30 organizations). Levitt Shell 75th Anniversary

River Arts Festival

River Arts Fest is an annual fine arts festival in the historic South Main Arts District. River Arts Fest features an artist market with more than 150 regional and national artists, as well as an invitational art exhibition, art demonstrations, food, music, and fun for all! As a part of Memphis Means Music Month, The River Arts Fest will have over 50 acts performing on four stages. And it’s all free! River Arts Fest, a 501(c)3 organization, is governed by a leadership committee of volunteers from the business, arts and civic sectors, as well as a Board of Directors and an Advisory Council. All profits will go back into growing the festival and cultivating the arts community in Memphis.

2011 Community Partner Events Leadership Memphis Diversity Breakfast

Cost: Cost is $50 per person

Leadership Memphis presents the annual Multicultural Breakfast on October 26 to focus on multiculturalism in the Memphis community and its increasing importance relating to civic inclusivity, quality of life, and global connectivity. The program will feature a special M3 Month performance and guest speaker Dr. Rajiv Grover of the University of Memphis who will speak on ” Two Keys to Great Leadership: Diversity and Creativity.” This talk will focus on two relevant concepts that make great leaders – diversity and creativity. How diversity influences creativity and how creativity effects individual and organizational performance will be discussed. Evidence from recent findings regarding the same will be presented. Behaviors, attitudes and policies influencing diversity and creativity will be explored. The Multicultural Breakfast is open to Leadership Memphis alumni and the general public. The event begins at 8:00 am.

Memphis Farmers Market

The Memphis Farmers Market is a weekly non-profit outdoor market featuring local farmers and artisans. Enjoy live music and weekly themed events and programs. The market showcases locally sourced produce and food items and locally produced arts and crafts from the Mid-South region and also serves to educate the community about eating local, nutrition and food choices.

Opera Memphis Tosca

Opera Memphis opens its 2011-2012 season with Puccini’s classic drama TOSCA. Set in Rome in 1800, the opera includes some of Puccini’s best-loved arias and has inspired legendary performances from many of opera’s performances from many of opera’s leading singers, including Luciano Pavarotti and Maria Callas.

Rock Your Granny

Bring your mobile phones and vote for your favorite band at this concert. All money raised by the bands for this event will support arts programs for older adults. Prizes for the bands with the most votes include a professionally produced music video, studio time, plus much more! All types of bands are invited to participate in this concert.
