The Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the Maple Leaf

When the DD first started playing back in the 1970s, they played tiny little holes-in-the-wall like the infamous Glass House in Central City. But soon after graduating to bigger stages, they were touring the world spreading New Orleans-style brass band music across the globe.

Since those heady days, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band mostly play at festivals and on big stages in New Orleans. But they are headlining all this month on Saturday nights at the Maple Leaf Bar. The small stage allows fans an intimacy with the band that recalls a series of shows that they performed at the sorely missed Warehouse Café during Jazz Fest in the 1990s.

One of the owners of the Warehouse Café, which is now the restaurant 1179, is Jack Leonardi who is the current proprietor of Jacques-imo’s. Of course regular denizens of Oak Street know that the restaurant is right next door from the Maple Leaf Bar. Talk about a reunion!

Here they are playing at the Bonneroo Festival in 2002-
