The Weekend Shots!

Kick off your weekend with another of Tipitina’s Foundation Free Friday performances at the uptown club. Austin band Uncle Lucius opens for the Honey Island Swamp Band. The HISBEEs have been touring relentlessly this summer. My brother reports that a show in San Diego had a bigger crowd than anyone, the band included, expected. Special guest saxophonist Karl Denson upped the ante for a band that is really hitting its stride.

Saturday is the 5th official Record Raid, which is being held in the Bywater neighborhood at a new venue, Siberia (2227 St. Claude Ave) from noon to 6 PM. Over twenty vendors are expected. 45s, LPs, CDs, cassettes and more from private and storefront collections across the gulf south are sold in an informal flea-market fashion, as well as live DJs showing off their own collections. The event is open to the public and entry is free. The Record Raid aims to boost second hand music appreciation, bring music lovers together, and in doing so foster a greater awareness of music and culture.

Saturday and Sunday night a band from Ontario, Canada is playing at the Neutral Ground and Chickie Wah Wah respectively. Amber Reigns (pictured) is an alternative rock band that is getting rave reviews in their home country. They are a conscious group of individuals who focus on serious issues such as homelessness, substance abuse and other world causes. While the subject matter of their songs may be serious, the band seriously rocks. They are on their first US tour.
