Christmas concerts conclude at Cathedral

If you haven’t taken advantage of the free evening performances in historic St. Louis Cathedral, you have two more nights to take in the spectacle in Jackson Square.

Every year the magic of Christmas lights up the Vieux Carre and nowhere looks better than the old square at the heart of the French Quarter. The concerts, which begin at 6 PM, have been going on all month.

Tonight, the trumpeter Irvin Mayfield performs holiday classics. Tomorrow night the delightful series concludes for 2011 with a rousing celebration hosted by the St. Peter Claver Gospel Choir.

Though, the St. Louis Cathedral is the most famous church in the city and arguably one of the most visible landmarks in the United States, St. Peter Claver’s roots go back almost as far. The church, which is located, several blocks from the French Quarter in the Tremé neighborhood, was built in 1852. It was originally known as St. Ann’s and became St. Peter Claver Parish in 1920 when the Joesphites purchased the landmark building.
