Weekend Shots!

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation gives us another two-day festival that is scheduled in conjunction with another festival (got that?), a famous indie rock band plays at One Eyed Jack’s, a hot free show and an invasion from the north.

The Cajun/Zydeco Festival takes place this weekend on the grounds of the Old U.S. Mint while the Creole Tomato Festival takes over the Farmer’s Market. The Jazz and Heritage Foundation supports the community with proceeds from the spring extravaganza known as Jazz Fest by throwing four community festivals that are free.

Expect to see Cajun legend D.L Menard, Zydeco sweetheart Rosie Ledet (pictured) and twenty other acts from southwest Louisiana. Click here for the full schedule.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah burst on the scene with their eponymous self-released album in 2005. They play tonight at One Eyed Jack’s.

Lead singer Alec Ounsworth is no stranger to New Orleans. He recorded his solo album Mo Beauty with local stalwarts George Porter, Jr., Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, the Bonerama Horns, and other New Orleans musicians at Piety Street Studios.

Tipitina’s is getting back into summer mode with the re-start of the Foundation Free Fridays series. Tonight, Los Po-Boy Citos are joined by the T.I.P. Interns and Mas Mamones. It should be a good night of Latin fun.

Our correspondent to the north, “Baton Rouge” Bill Boelens called in with a hot tip from Red Stick. Two bands from his neck of the woods are playing Saturday night at Checkpoint Charlie. Boelens shot the video at Baton Rouge’s premier independent record store, the Atomic Pop Shop. Come on Kerry, send us your logo!

Rondo Hatton is a four-piece instrumental eclectic rock band that plays surf guitar, early rock ‘n’ roll, the blues and even polka tunes. The Ventures and Dick Dale are among their biggest influences.

Their drummer, Joe Micelli, is a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. The lead guitarist and bandleader Bruce Lamb has played virtually every style including Cajun, bluegrass, Conjunto, and country. He even backed up Flaco Jimenez during a sojourn in Austin, Texas. The rhythm guitarist Johnny Rossetti leads the blues jam at Phil Brady’s in Baton Rouge.

Rondo Hatton opens for Flatbed Honeymoon—an alt-country/Americana band that is also from the Baton Rouge area. See you there!
