Ruffins to reopen the Mother-in-Law Lounge

Go figure—as reported last week on TVD, the city of New Orleans has been cracking down on live music venues. But yesterday, the Planning Commission gave the New Orleans trumpeter permission to re-open the iconic Tremé landmark.

Kermit Ruffins has held a lease on the building, which was the home base for R&B legend Ernie K-Doe during his decade-long comeback, since early in 2011. But due to a variety of factors, not the least of which was a car crashing through the front door, the venue lost its alcohol and live music permits because it was closed for over six months.

Ruffins, who works nearly every night of the week entertaining crowds at venues all over the city, soon will have three businesses open in the city as well. He recently opened a restaurant, Kermit’s Tremé Speakeasy, on Basin Street. He has been a partner in Sidney’s Saloon on St. Bernard Avenue for several years.
