Weekend Shots!

Men in red dresses, people in dirty clothes, and lots of music. Where you’ll be this weekend in New Orleans.

The Hash House Harriers, a drinking club with a running problem, present their annual Red Dress Run on Saturday morning at 11 AM. Thousands will turn out at Armstrong Park for a dash through the French Quarter. Most will walk.

One of the fascinating sights during Dirty Linen Night on Royal Street is the leftover stragglers from the Red Dress Run. Amid the wine drinking art aficionados strolling the 11-block stretch in the French Quarter, one can usually spot a few totally inebriated people in red dresses and running shoes. Give them a hearty hello, but I recommend keeping your distance. They have been drinking and sweating since just after dawn.

The Free Foundation Friday series at Tipitina’s continues for a few more weeks. Tonight check out Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs with Mia Borders (pictured).

The Band of Heathens, a rock band from Austin, takes over the Maple Leaf Bar on Friday night. Kudos to Hank for booking a touring band in the dog days of summer. I haven’t seen them yet, but if they are playing at the “Spleaf” they must be good.

Since you’re going to be downtown on Saturday night anyway, consider checking out Colin Lake at the Blue Nile. He has been getting a lot of press lately and the kids love him.

If jazz is your thing, Jacqui Naylor headlines at Snug Harbor. Her approach to jazz vocals is innovative and very interesting. She calls it “smashing” and it involves merging jazz melodies with more pop-oriented songs. Imagine “My Funny Valentine” and AC/DC’s “Back in the Black.” It’s better than it sounds. See you there!
