First annual “Freret Street Oyster Jam” set for January 19, 2014

The all day celebration of the oyster will feature live “Fish Head” Music, iconic oyster shuckers, and playoff football on the Sunday of Martin Luther King’s day weekend.

The Freret Market, Publiq House, Woody’s Tacos, and Family Fish Productions is presenting uptown’s first oyster-centric festival. The party will be from 11 AM until 8 PM at the Publiq House and adjacent lot, 4528 Freret Street, New Orleans, LA.

The event will feature a giant raw oyster bar and guest chefs creating new and classic oyster-based dishes. The “Freret Street Oyster Jam” will take advantage of the giant parking lot located adjacent to the Publiq House as well as the spacious new club.

The music will be provided by Raw Oyster Cult, (pictured) the New Orleans Suspects , the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra and special guests. Woody Ruiz, the owner of Woody’s Fish Tacos and the mastermind of the event said, “We wanted to throw a big bash when oysters are at their peak and Raw Oyster Cult was an obvious fit as musical entertainment for this event.”

Iconic oyster shuckers already confirmed for the event are some of the best-known bivalve experts in the city including previous winners of the “Fastest Oyster Shucker” honors.

The date of the first annual “Freret Street Oyster Jam” corresponds with the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend and the National Football League’s AFC and NFC championship games.

The Publiq House has become a favorite spot to watch football and should the New Orleans Saints reach the final game leading up to the Superbowl, multiple screens will be set up outside in addition to the state of the art screens that line the walls of the club.
