Freakwater’s new LP Scheherazade in stores, play Gasa Gasa, 3/9

It’s been over ten years since the alt-country act released their last record. But now they are back and are playing at Gasa Gasa on Wednesday night. Jaye Jayle and Morgan Geer’s Drunken Prayer are the supporting acts. Show time is 9 PM.

In 1985, Freakwater’s Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin first recorded their distinctive harmonies under a swinging Kentucky country ham in Janet’s parent’s basement. After 30 years together, Catherine and Janet’s unflinching lyrics and compelling vocal harmonies can stab you in the heart from a mile away.

There is a powerful continuity to their work but the band has never been constrained by any musical genre. Freakwater has released seven highly acclaimed studio albums, although their rate of production has been wildly sporadic. Freakwater’s lack of any normal human ambition and complete inability to capitalize on the brightest moments of critical acclaim have endeared them to their most loyal fans—while their dense shroud of mystery continues to lure the young and vulnerable.

The new album, Scheherazade, is getting some incredible reviews. Pitchfork, agreeing with TVD said, “There’s something invigorating about hearing two alt-country veterans take apart their tried-and-true sound and reassemble it slightly askew, and Scheherazade is not only their most modern-sounding record; it might be their best since Old Paint.”

So, come on out to see what the all the fuss is about.
