6/17 at The Red Devil Lounge: Missing Persons, Gene Loves Jezebel, & “that one band”:

No need for a hot tub time machine to travel back to the flamboyant 80’s this weekend. You just need a can of Aqua Net, parachute pants, and a ticket to one hell of an 80s flashback happening this Friday night at The Red Devil Lounge.

First up: When in Rome – A band that gives a whole new meaning to the term “one-hit wonder”. No one can remember the band’s name or their hit, but once you hear “The Promise” you start to think, “Oh yeah, that song from that one band”.

Second up: Gene Loves Jezebel -The often celebrated Gothic rock band from the 1980s founded by identical twin brothers, Michael and Jay Aston made some fantastic records in their heyday. There was ultimately a falling out between the brothers over the musical direction of the band, and now there are two versions. Michael owns the exclusive rights to Gene Loves Jezebel in the US and continues to perform and release new material. I have always been a casual fan of these guys but never seen them live. Although I am not thrilled about them performing acoustic, it should be an interesting intimate glimpse into a band that has only grazed the US charts but somehow always retained a dedicated cult following.

And the Headliner: Missing Persons – Last month Dale Bozzio and Warren Cuccurullo announced that they have reformed Missing Persons for a reunion tour in anticipation of the 30th Anniversary of Spring Session M, the band’s groundbreaking, Gold-selling album. Sadly drummer extraordinaire Terry Bozzio will not be in this reunion as Dale and Warren are quoted as saying, “rock bands are dysfunctional families at best, and sometimes, the show just can’t go on with all on-board.” With that being said, these guys (and a girl) had some major hits. I have high hopes for this show and I expect Missing Persons to deliver a full meal deal of 80’s nostalgia in the form of pure new wave greatness.
