The TVD First Date

“There’s something about the sound of a record, it’s just so raw and lo-fi, it makes even the new stuff sound aged. I dig that more dramatic aspect while listening.”

“I had a nice children’s record collection when I was a wee, little one. Several of them were probably my older sister’s, but I wound up keeping them and still have them now. The Wizard of Oz, I’d like to teach the world to sing (in perfect harmony), Tubby the Tuba, and of course, the singing nun’s classic Dominique (a sort of gag gift from one of my parents’ friends).

My parents always had a nice collection of records, being musicians themselves. Around the house they would play lots of Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong, Albert King, John Coltrane, and Joe Pass (my dad’s former guitar teacher through his 20’s).

I fell in love all over again with vinyl, and began to collect myself around 18 years old. By 20, I got wise and scoured my parents’ collection, taking a couple boxes full that included: Ricky Nelson, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Ike & Tina, David Bowie, and Bonnie Raitt.

Over the last few years, I’ve collected a ton of stuff, lots of old, some contemporary. A bunch of Elvis, Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson, The Drifters, Eddie Cochran, Billie Holiday, Harry Belafonte, Edith Piaf, Dolly Parton, Oingo Boingo, X, Electric Light Orchestra, Karen Elson, Tennis, The Black Keys, Pete Molinari, Fiona Apple, the XX. You could say it’s an eclectic mix.

I just recently scored these incredible Horror Rock Classics albums—one is shaped like a bat, and the other is a clear orange pumpkin. I might begin a fetish for record shapes alone.

My record collection is currently in storage, along with the rest of my life, and it feels like I’m missing an appendage. I am dreaming about the day in the not so distant future when I get to rediscover my whole collection once it’s out of storage. My friends often get me records for birthdays, so it’s going to be as if I’m having the best birthday ever!”
