TVD Live Shots: Billy Strings at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, 12/14

WORDS AND IMAGES: DANA WALSH in AUSTIN, TX | The air was electric, the crowd buzzing with anticipation, and the stage set for an unforgettable evening. Billy Strings brought his signature blend of bluegrass mastery and heartfelt storytelling to ACL, delivering a performance that felt as intimate as a front porch jam session and as grand as a theater spectacle.

From the moment the first note of “Ridin’ That Midnight Train” filled the room, the audience was transported into a world of raw emotion, impeccable musicianship, and a connection that only live music can create. This wasn’t just a concert—it was an experience, a celebration of music, memories, and the magic of being present in the moment.

Billy Strings playing at ACL was a night to be remembered. Just arriving at the show was an experience all on its own, but the music he and his band delivered, along with the way the show was set up, was nothing short of spectacular in the most simple, down-to-earth kind of way. It didn’t matter where you were in the theater; it felt as though you were sitting across from them in his living room or on his front porch while he and his buddies were having a good time playing music. It felt free and personal at the same time.

Before I arrived, I already knew there would be a large crowd waiting to get in, and I was right. Except, they weren’t just people waiting for a show; I would have to say that most, if not all, were hardcore Billy Strings diehards. Of any show I have ever gone to in my life, I saw more pure joy and excitement than I have ever witnessed. It was beautiful and so exciting to be in that vibe.

Waiting inside the doors for the show to start, I cannot tell you how many people were actually dancing through the doors as they entered. I’ve never seen anything like it—it was amazing. The energy pouring out was incredibly enjoyable.

Inside the theater, it was packed, from the floor to the balconies, with all the same people still energized and happy to be there. When the music started, and the lights came up, we rounded the corner to a completely different scene than I had imagined while waiting for the day of the show.

There were five chairs, a rug, a coffee table, and a couple of lamps. It was like being in a theater production, and that’s exactly how it felt. Every single person was completely engaged. They began the show with “Ridin’ That Midnight Train,” and that definitely set the tone for the evening.

One of the things I love most about live music is watching the musicians feed off each other and improvise when it happens, and that’s how it was all night. The sound, the harmonies, the atmosphere—everything was spot-on perfect to the ears. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass filled the air with magic. It was sincerely something to behold.

For me, one song that really stood out was “Old Home Town.” Hey, I grew up on a dairy farm—not the same scenario, but my family owned a property for about 85 years, and now there’s a fast-food restaurant where the yard used to be. So, yeah, it took me back. All of the music did. But the way it’s expressed makes everything so real and alive. Stories, man. Stories. Tell me something—truth—the good, the bad, and the ugly. God, I’m glad I was there for this show.

Another song that struck me was “Down the Road.” It reminded me of a tune my grandfather used to sing when I was tiny, and every once in a while, he’d start doing a little jig in the middle of the room. Very cool.

It’s really no wonder to me that two of his albums have won Grammys, most recently in 2025 for Best Bluegrass Album, Live Volume 1. Here’s the thing: the man has a voice that can go in a lot of different directions, I’m sure. His music and his band fit perfectly together, and all of that. But for me, the reason I wanted to shoot this show is that I watched some interviews with him, and I dig the person, too. No, I don’t know him, but he’s salt of the earth—no pretense, no bullshit, just Billy. And I’m grateful he’s out there keepin’ it real.
