Dumpstaphunk joins Lionel Richie on tour

If you happened to be in Brooklyn, New York or the surrounding metropolitan area last night, you might have heard about one of the most unlikely musical pairings to come down the pike in years.

The New Orleans band, which is led by keyboardist and vocalist Ivan Neville, is opening for the “All Night Long” superstar on five arena dates beginning at the new Barclay’s Center in the hip New York borough, and ending on October 18, 2013 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Though the two bands appear to have mutually exclusive fan bases, this is nothing but a good thing for Dumpstaphunk. Any time a local band gets a chance to tour with someone of the stature of Richie insures that our unique brand of funk is heard by tens of thousands of people who might otherwise be unaware of the sounds emanating from the Crescent City.

The other three dates are September 27 at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA, October 12 at the Woodlands Pavilion in Houston, TX and October 17 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.

Starina:
The TVD First Date

“I grew up on vinyl. My father, who was a musician and audiophile himself, was a major influence in my musical upbringing and the sounds of Elvis, early Beatles, Beach Boys, and Abba (yes, Abba) were the background vinyl soundtrack of my youth.”

“Ya’ know, when you’re younger and you’re forced to listen to your parents’ music, you think it’s cheesy and for old farts. And I of course was no different from any other kid and wanted to discover my own music. Which, I eventually did. But I must say, my father handed me down a gem, which opened Pandora’s box for me.

After a few spins of the hit single, “Brass In Pocket” he got tired of Chrissie Hynde and her boys and casually offered me The Pretenders’ first album.

I was intrigued. She looked tough, a little intimidating, and very different from the girls on my Dad’s Abba albums. I wanted to know more, but there was only the front and back shot, and she was wearing the same outfit in both. The album had limited artwork, and the inner sleeve had no lyrics. Well, I soon found out that the music and her red leather spoke for itself.

Graded on a Curve: Frankie Rose,
Herein Wild

Last year, Frankie Rose turned a lot of heads with her second LP Interstellar, a record that far exceeded the expectations of even those already well versed in her significant background as a prime instigator of contempo noise pop rumblings. That disc’s follow up is titled Herein Wild, her first effort for new label Fat Possum, and if lesser than the album that greatly raised Rose’s level of visibility, it still finds this indie auteur traversing a solid, if by now somewhat familiar, creative path.

A major aspect in the profile of Frankie Rose relates to her membership in Crystal Stilts, the Vivian Girls, and Dum Dum Girls, all prominent names in the indie/noise/dream pop scene. And her involvement came early in the lifespan of all three bands, with this circumstance lending Rose well-deserved credibility as an originator in this likeable and often very interesting backward-looking contempo scenario, even before she bothered to step out on her own.

But step out is just what Rose eventually did, making her initial stride with the ’09 45 “Thee Only One” b/w “Hollow Life.” And it’s a record that does tread some pretty well-trod real estate, but in a manner very similar to her stylistic cohorts, the combination of confidence and range continues to make the disc a winner.

The A-side combines an uptempo melody with strong doses of echo and guitar raucousness and then completes them with a breathy but always engaging vocal presence. In summation, it’s exactly the kind of inaugural statement you’d expect to find as part of the Slumberland Records roster, but the flip’s slower, organ-kissed examination of more classically gal-pop environs remains a highly pleasant departure from the bold indie pop-isms of “Thee Only One.”

TVD Live: Austra at
the Black Cat, 9/19

PHOTOS: RICHIE DOWNSFrom the first haunting note delivered by lead vocalist Katie Stelmanis at the Black Cat on Thursday night, electronic act Austra made clear their intentions to deliver a powerful performance to an eager, enthusiastic crowd.

It didn’t hurt that the band chose to lead with “What We Done?” the first song off of their second studio album, this summer’s Olympia. Just as the song sets the stage for the thoughtful grandiosity that pervades the album, so did it preview the Canadian band’s live show.

I have seen Stelmanis’ voice called “massive,” and I cannot think of a better descriptor. A classically-trained singer with an opera background, she filled the Black Cat’s main stage more robustly than any singer I had heard there before. Perhaps surprisingly, her range beautifully complements the musical beats and electronic backings delivered by drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf.

Austra kept the lights mostly dark, often obscuring the band members and keeping the focus on Stelmanis’s vocal power and the band’s music. Visually, the stage was peppered with white umbrellas, back-lit by purple or neon lights. The dramatic lighting complemented the music and was beautiful to watch, though I would have appreciated more of an opportunity to see the actual musicians on stage.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Superchunk at the 9:30 Club, 9/29

After an extended hiatus, Superchunk shows signs of sustaining a kick they’ve been on since reforming in 2010. This August saw the release of I Hate Music, their 10th studio album. Power chords, nostalgic guitar tones, and plenty of melodic hooks can be found in I Hate Music. The album dips a bit darker than most of Superchunk’s other material, but still retains a hefty amount of memorable riffs and chord progressions.

The ’90s indie rock quartet will be coming to the 9:30 Club on September 29th. We’ve got tickets to giveaway, so come and get ’em.

The story of Superchunk starts back in ’89. At the time, band members Mac McCaughen and Laura Ballance founded Merge Records as an independent label that would release the material of their own projects, as well as their friends. Through Merge, the first Superchunk single was released to critical acclaim.

The Pinstripes:
The TVD First Date

“My obsession with vinyl records dates back to 2005 when I purchased a bundle of records even before I owned a turntable to play them on.”

“I remember seeing a vinyl sale from one of my favorite labels at the time, Asian Man Records. It was a mystery pack, but to me the perfect starter set, since it was a dozen new records for an affordable $40 or so. I remember receiving the package mailed directly from label owner Mike Park himself with a hand-written thank you note inside.

My only experience with vinyl prior to this was coming across my parents’ water damaged records sitting on a shelf in our basement. It was refreshing and inspiring to see bands and labels like Asian Man care about pressing music on vinyl.

Over the next year, I would casually and slowly add to my record collection. A punk record here, a ska-punk record there. It wasn’t until I saw the Jamaican film Rockers, that I found a love and fascination for reggae and traditional ska music as well as Jamaican culture. If you’ve never seen it, Rockers is a cult classic film that features many of the top reggae musicians and performers of the time playing themselves; it’s a must see for anyone with even a passing interest in Jamaican culture.

UK Artist of the Week: Scary People

Taking their cue from alternative rock noisenicks such as Death From Above 1979 and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Dundee’s Scary People are an exciting prospect with an accomplished sound evident on just their sole debut EP.

It feels as though Scary People almost came together by accident after tour technicians, Dan and Scott had a week to form a live band before their first sell out performance supporting The View. They quickly got their pals Jamie and Troy involved and Scary People were born. The four piece have been playing ever since and have big plans since the debut EP “Smoke.”

They’ve already supported The Cribs and have played a headline slot at Scotland’s Doune The Rabbit Hole festival and they’re not stopping there. There are more singles to come and a possible album in the works—the “Smoke” EP is just the start. With the quality of music they’re already releasing, Scary People are set to take us on an exciting ride and we’ll be hanging in there with them.

Graded on a Curve:
The Raspberries,
Starting Over

It’s a miracle that anyone survives adolescence. And I’m not talking about drugs or driving 110 mph while on drugs or any of the other healthy activities normal teens engage in—no, I’m talking about potentially lethal sperm build-up. Speaking just for myself, I was a lusus naturae of unsated lust, and often found myself leering at vacuum cleaners. One day I discovered that my skull was producing an oily discharge, and it took a physician to inform me that I was literally secreting sperm through the follicles of my hair.

It was a lonely and demeaning condition, but fortunately I had The Raspberries. They were more than just the greatest power pop band ever—they were the Masters and Johnson of Rock. No other rock band has ever given more eloquent voice to the victims of adolescent hormonal overload. In such ardent and urgent songs as “Go All the Way,” “Tonight,” “I Wanna Be With You,” “Ecstasy,” and “Let’s Pretend,” The Raspberries spoke to the only subject that really mattered to poon-crazed teens like me—namely getting some, and preferably tonight.

The Raspberries formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1970, the year after the Cuyahoga River caught fire: an ill omen in hindsight, for despite their polished Beatles and Mod-influenced sound, irresistible melodies, arresting guitar hooks, and heavenly vocal harmonies, The Raspberries never scored a No. 1 hit on the singles or album charts before breaking up in 1975. The band’s first single, 1972’s brilliant “Go All the Way,” rose all the way to the No. 5 spot. They were never to come as close to the top of the pops again.

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

My road trip this week continues from NYC to the great state of Tennessee. They call Nashville a “music town,” and there is certainly something to be said about that. Trusted music heads have been telling me about this Americana Music Conference, so I booked a trip down south to take a look-see.

Wednesday night’s AMC awards show was a surprise, a shocker in fact. The honorees, presenters, and live performers were a super cool mix of new bands and legends.

Highlights were Robert Hunter’s touching speech and performance of “Ripple,” Duane Eddy shredding “Rebel Rouser,” the Milk Carton Kids harmonies and humor, Emi Lou and Rodney, and the night’s winner Shovels & Rope.

TVD Live Shots: The Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, 9/14–9/15

How much heavy metal can one consume in a weekend? Apparently, two full days, as that’s what I chose to subject myself to. The Aftershock Festival roared into Sacramento, bringing a full-on metal assault to the state’s capital city, led by the nu-metal likes of Korn and Papa Roach, and rounded out with the classic metal of Megadeth, the Sunset Strip sounds of BuckCherry, and a surprisingly awesome newcomer called In This Moment.

Other acts on the bill included Danish metal band Volbeat, Finish Goth rockers HIM, thrash metal legends Testament, and the faux glam rockers Steel Panther. There was something for everyone under the blazing hot sun, and it would be the final metal festival of the year for us West Coasters.

Aftershock Festival shot by Jason Miller @Jasonmillerca-2-9

The lineup on paper looks pretty much all over the place, but surprisingly the music fit together pretty well. Although it was impossible to catch every individual band that would be playing, it was easy enough to put together a plan of attack to see the ones that mattered.

I have to say the true highlight of the entire festival for me was In This Moment. I had never seen these guys and a girl before, and they were absolutely incredible. Falling somewhere in between Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson, it’s a combination that sounds like a living nightmare, but it’s pure genius when it’s happening right in front of you.

TVD Premiere: The Harmed Brothers, “Love Song for the Assumed”

“Call me romantic, call me poisoned by one too many viewings of Almost Famous, but for me, the act of listening to a vinyl record—the ritual itself—choosing the record, undressing it—it’s calming.”

“It’s the equivalent of enjoying a great novel. The cover and sleeve may be crisp and sleek, or tattered and hanging by threads of broken cardboard, paper and memories. They have their own kind of wonderful, unique scent to them. If the scent is strong enough, you can probably taste it too. Your eyes lock onto the artwork, inviting you into its world. The grooves can get you—the sight of the needle gracefully running against the grooves until its reached its final destination—the sight of the record itself simply revolving. They all have hypnotic qualities.

Personally, I think there’s a special relationship between listener and vinyl record, just as there is between audience and performer. You can feel the warmth and spirit, just as you could experiencing the music live. It’s very personal, intimate, direct. The turntable is this tiny revolving stage upon which someone or some group gets to tell their story. I think that there’s something in the sound and production—whether the album be new or old—that transports you to this dimension where music is at its purest. It doesn’t belong to any one age or time period. There’s something in a vinyl, a record that transcends time.

5 Questions with David Shaw of The Revivalists

Tomorrow night (Saturday, 9/21) the homegrown indie rock band celebrates returning to New Orleans with a show at Tipitina’s after an epic summer of festivals and touring. We caught up with the lead singer for this e-interview:

You’ve had quite a summer, hitting some of the biggest festivals in the country. What was you favorite part of doing the summer festival circuit?

We’ve had a great time hitting all the festivals this summer, but the thing that I’m most excited about is becoming a part of the festival family. We can now go to any city in America and see friends that we’ve met along the way. It’s an exceptionally good feeling.

Two of the festivals that you hit this summer, High Sierra and Bonnaroo, have major New Orleans connections and traditionally have booked lots of New Orleans bands. Can you compare the two festivals in a few sentences?

Hot, sweaty, dusty, vibey, and filled with a whole lot of people who genuinely love music and the power that it possess.

TVD Vinyl Giveaway: The Young Sinclairs, “You Know Where to Find Me” 7-inch EP

Hey, I found a cool new band! I can’t believe I hadn’t heard The Young Sinclairs up till now because really they’re not that new…and they’re really good. They definitely have plenty of recordings under their belts. The most recent of which, the “You Know Where to Find Me” EP on 7-inch can be yours free—thanks to our friends at Planting Seeds Records!

The Young Sinclairs have been bringing their brand of jangly 60’s inspired psych/folk/rock (RIYL: The Byrds, The Essex Green, Rain Parade, The Zombies, etc.) to the world since 2005 as part of the Magic Twig Community.

The band features: John Thompson, Daniel Cundiff (Eternal Summers), Kyle Harris (The Diamond Center), Joe Lunsford, and Samuel Lunsford (ex 63 Crayons). In their more than five year history they have self-released several full length LPs, EPs, and cassettes, including a vinyl-only LP via legendary indiepop label Kindercore Records.

As a Committee To Keep Music Evil affiliate, The Young Sinclairs have successfully toured with The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Australian group The Lovetones. They have also played in support of 60’s stoner legends Blue Cheer and Sweden’s Dungen, among many others.”
