Johnstown, PA | Johnstown record store sees strong Black Friday traffic: For many types of retailers, Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has traditionally been the biggest day for sales. That tradition has faded with online shopping thinning crowds at big-box stores, but independent record stores remain a draw. About 20 people waited Friday outside George’s Song Shop for its 8 a.m. opening. Inside, hundreds of limited-edition vinyl albums were stocked for Black Friday, in addition to the shop’s usual wall-to-wall inventory. A continuous stream of customers entered the shop throughout the afternoon, purchasing multiple albums each. The shop at 128 Market St. in Johnstown has been owned by John George since 1962, but it dates back to 1932 and claims the title of “America’s oldest record store.”

Triple Play ordered 10 copies about three months ahead of time, of which they received only two. Campbell was lucky enough to snag one.

New Orleans, LA | The Black Keys to host a ‘Record Hang’ DJ show at New Orleans’ Saturn Bar: Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney will spin records for a late night of ‘dancing, drinks and vinyl’ at the St. Claude Avenue bar. Guitarist/ vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, of The Black Keys, are responsible for an extensive catalog of recorded music, the latest example being this past summer’s “No Rain, No Flowers” album. But they are also huge music fans who seem to enjoy showcasing other musicians’ songs as much as their own. Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound record label has a roster of nearly three dozen artists, many from the rootsier side of the music spectrum. And in an example of taking the music directly to the people, Auerbach and Carney have for at least the past couple years hosted occasional Record Hang shows at clubs in various cities in the United States and abroad. These “hangs” are marathon DJ sets, during which Auerbach and Carney take turns spinning vinyl 45s. The late-night events are billed as an evening of “dancing, drinks and vinyl.”
