The city is packed to the gills with revelers getting ready to cheer on their team in the Sugar Bowl, which takes place tonight in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. But for music lovers without tickets to the big game there are two really good options among a plethora of choices.
It’s been said that the best time to beat the crowds at Preservation Hall is when New Orleans hosts the Super Bowl. Since it’s been a decade since we had that pleasure, the second best time has to be the night of the Sugar Bowl.
Tonight one of TVD’s favorite drummers, Shannon Powell, leads his the Preservation Hall Stars. For ebullient bandleaders, it just doesn’t get better than Powell. He always has an infectious smile on his face.
If traditional jazz is not your thing, head over to Frenchmen Street. The guitarist Phil DeGruy is holding court tonight and he’s promising some serious entertainment.
I quote from his ever-solicitous press materials, “Even though there are variants in genes that turn down the function of dopamine signaling within the pleasure circuit, I will be playing at Snug Harbor Tuesday night at 8 and 10 PM.
And I will be snorting sucrose ON STAGE, as the Sugar Bowl is in action…Please stop by and hear such once-a-year classics as, ‘In case you haven’t heard, football is really gay.’
