TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

For some weeks now, us “Angelinos” have been media blitz’d from all angles: electronic freeway signs, newspapers, local TV adds, Tweets, even a great Youtube clip of a re-subtitled Anthony Hopkins as none other that Adolf Hitler! The daunting message? Today’s midnight closing of the 405 Freeway—which has become known as “Carmageddon.”

A summer Friday on the North/South bound “405″ would be the West Coast’s equivalent of New York’s L.I.E. Thus, diverting a huge five lane, bumper to bumper traffic jam into the streets of a major metropolis is, in fact, a fairly scary thought for a hot summer day. Caramgeddon could likely fall in with other over-hyped predictions of impending doom such as the ’84 Summer Olympics, Y2K, and the recent Rapture—but hype or jam, it’s a significant event for this week’s Idelic Hour muse!

Most here in LA will use the 405 freeway closing as an excuse to stay at home and simply FUCK OFF and do nothing, but will LA streets be deserted as they were the day after the big earthquake in ’94?

Knowing the lay of the land, I would bet that somewhere in this town there will be many stuck in a serious bumper to bumper mess. With this in mind I tried to create an engaging playlist that could relax and entertain some poor soul trapped in traffic with the right touch of old and new songs and a bit of humor and irony—but not too much.

New releases in the mix: Ty Segall, Tinariwen, Sarabeth Tucek, Fruit Bats, Luther Russell, I Break Horses, and Jesse Skykes.
