Introducing: Sneakpeek

Sneakpeek are a recently formed quartet who hail from Echo Park in California, playing a glorious racket which sits somewhere between garage punk, grungy modern psychedelia and dream-pop.

Their seven song debut EP will be released this summer, but in the meantime, here’s a demo of their song ‘Western Sky’:

We caught up with the band this week, and they told us a little about where they’ve been, where they are, where they are going and where they’d like to be!

Who are you, please name the members of the band, and tell us what you play.

Dora Hiller – Bass, Vocals
Aric Bohn – Lead Guitar
Mike Motz – Rhythm Guitar
Aaron Haack – Drums

Tell us about the scene in Echo Park, it seems to be a little cultural haven.

We love living in Echo Park. You can practice as loud as you want and no one seems to care. Echo Park has always been an artist refuge and known to attract creative people. There’s a a very tight knit community of musicians who are all friends.

What were you doing prior to this band?

Aric, Mike and Aaron were in a band in High School called The Mutes. Aric played guitar for The Willowz. Dora used to sing and play bass in all girl folk band but quit to start SNEAKPEEK.

Name 5 works of art (music, books, paintings, poetry, movies, plays etc.) that inspire you.

Album: Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Book: Just Kids by Patti Smith
Painting: Anything by Alphonse Mucha
Poetry: Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
Movie: Badlands by Terrence Malick

Proud to be American or citizens of the world?

Proud to be from California

Does vinyl have a place in your heart in this fast and throwaway digital age?

Vinyl will always have a place in our heart. The sound quality of a record on vinyl is unparalleled. I also think musicians these days have lost the art form of creating a record as a whole, that can be played as one entity, rather than having random singles here and there.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Well we are just starting… We’ve only played three shows so far as SNEAKPEEK and have another one coming up this friday at 5 Star Bar in Downtown LA. It certainly is enjoyable to know people are liking our music.

Are you comfortable with the whole DIY release process?

Definitely. At the moment, we are planning on self releasing our 7 song EP at the end of this Summer/Early Fall.

Is playing live more important than making records?

Playing live is extremely crucial to figuring out what works best for your music. Something can sound amazing in your bedroom but if it doesn’t come across live, what’s the point? Playing/practicing live a million times is the best way to make your songs grow.

What would you do with a million dollars!?

Buy all the best instruments/pedals/recording gear we want. Go on a killer spring break style vacation around the world. Buy a Victorian mansion for us all to live in Angelino Heights.
