Jean Miche, The TVD First Date and Premiere, “Sous La Neige”

Like most artists living in NYC, it can be hard to meet up sometimes, so Jean Miche met up via WhatsApp to record themselves interviewing each other.

AKA JK: Hey, wanna do a walky talky interview?

La Fleur: Alright!

AKA JK: I guess we’re supposed to talk about records?

La Fleur: We’re supposed to talk about records? What are we supposed to say about records?

AKA JK: I dunno. I guess Jean Miche isn’t quite two years old, Jean Miche doesn’t have a lot of experience with records, huh?

La Fleur: Noooo, we don’t have any records. Actually, I’ve never… I’ve never been arrested in my life I don’t think.

AKA JK: Are you sure? Maybe you just can’t remember.

La Fleur: But we should definitely use that sound that just popped up, just right be for the second to last thing you sent… brrrmp brrmp brrmp. This thing we should sample it I think.

AKA JK: Ahh, we can make a new album of the sound of getting text messages.

La Fleur: But I can tell you the first record I listened to when I was 6 years old, 5 years old maybe. I don’t remember really. But I remember having this plastic turntable, shit turntable that you can use as a radio. And we were listening to 45s, me and my brother, and we were obsessed with “Le Freak” by Chic. And we just listened to that over and over and dressed up and danced like idiots. That was my story.

AKA JK: Was that your record or was it your parents’ record?

La Fleur: My dad’s.

AKA JK: Did your dad listen to a lot of dance 45s?

La Fleur: [laughing] Shhhhhyeahhh! He loved disco my dad, and Supertramp and the Beatles.

AKA JK: My mom used to listen to Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb they had a record called Guilty and she listened to that non-stop for like 2 years or whatever. Which is pretty amazing cause it’s like the Bee Gee’s production but with Barbara Streisand singing. It’s kind of an out of control memory. But yeah, other than that my folks didn’t really listen to DANCE music.

La Fleur: I really really want to listen to that track now!

AKA JK: FREAK OUT?

La Fleur: No, the Barbara Streisand and the Bee Gees

AKA JK: That record is so amazing!

AKA JK: Do you remember the first record that Jean Miche listened to?

La Fleur: Yeah, we listened to Jean Michel Jarre I guess.

AKA JK: Yep, we sure did. It’s sticking out of the record pile here at the studio actually.

La Fleur: And we tripped balls at the “Zoolook,” the Zoolook Look, the glasses on the eyes, and that was very fun, I remember we had fun.

[AKA JK sends La Fleur a photo of the record in the studio]

La Fleur: Oh hiiiii! Hi, Jean Michel!

AKA JK: I don’t think Jean Miche the band has listened to too many records as a band, no?

La Fleur: Together holding hands? Not many that’s for sure.

AKA JK: I think one day you were listening to Dub Reggae records and Psychic TV.

La Fleur: Yeah, I have a Psychic Album and I have a bunch of Velvet Underground and Prince and all those things. And I used to listen to a lot of music in my kitchen, but now I don’t have a turntable in the kitchen anymore.

AKA JK: Did we ever go in a record store together?

La Fleur: [sound Guilty playing] “WE ARE AND WE’LL NEVER LET IT END WE ARE DEVOTION”

La Fleur: No we never went shopping for anything. I feel like we always see each other that the studio, at a venue, or at a bar, yeah… pretty much.

AKA JK: We hear a lot of music at restaurants.

La Fleur: We got the really good one at the Polish Restaurant! [REDACTED THING ABOUT AKA JK’s SAXOPHONE MOVIE]… all night.

AKA JK: We also heard that really good playlist at Chimu with the crazy fucking lounge jazz.

La Fleur: Oh yeah, with the Spotify Interlude, that was pretty good that day. [And more sax]

AKA JK: We did go to a record store one time when our tapes were in Other Music, I think that’s the last record store I went to. So, yeah, we were both in a record store at the same time technically.

La Fleur: Yeah, I think the last record I might have bought was the Philip Glass one and it’s very weird. There’s a lot of people on this, Songs For Liquid Days. I dunno if I like it yet.

AKA JK: I haven’t bought a lot of records that I can remember. I think the last one was Severed Heads, a compilation. It was pretty cool, another record with synths and drum machines on it.

La Fleur: My last obsession with a record is the Selda album that I really like, I listen to it over and over, over and over, again and again and again. And now I’m shy because I don’t live by myself, there’s people living here and maybe they’re tired of listening to Selda all the time… I stopped.

AKA JK: I don’t know that record what is it?

La Fleur: She’s a Turkish singer and she made this country… country sort-of album, she has an amazing voice. Ahhh, yeah, I like this a lot. I wanted to send it to you but it’s not on YouTube so I guess I’ll just buy it for you. But it’s not really country. When I meant country I meant she’s a songwriter and she sings songs.

AKA JK: Like a singer-songwriter? [sarcastic laughs]

La Fleur: [sarcastic laughs back] yeah [more sarcastic laughs] !!

La Fleur: I have the biggest headache of all time!

AKA JK: Right now?

La Fleur: YES!

AKA JK: Theeennnn I think we’re done, eh?

La Fleur: Yeah, we might… Yeah I think so….

AKA JK: Cool! Well, I will see you soon! Bisous Bisous!

La Fleur: Bisous!
