I planned to experience Kabaka Pyramid’s Rebel Music – The Lyrics Tape for the first time on vinyl. I preordered the record and convinced myself I would wait for it to arrive before listening. That patience lasted about a week and a half. Eventually, I gave in, pressed play—and I am incredibly glad I did. Let me say this immediately: I absolutely love this album.
Released August 28, The Lyrics Tape arrives 15 years after Kabaka’s foundational “Rebel Music” EP introduced his unmistakable combination of roots reggae, hip-hop, dancehall, and conscious lyricism. This is more than an anniversary project, however. After losing an enormous archive of studio files and unfinished material, Kabaka treated the setback as a creative reset. Written and recorded between March and June 2026, these ten tracks reconnect with the hunger and raw energy of his beginnings while showcasing everything he has learned since.
Heavy reggae basslines, gritty hip-hop beats, soulful samples, and flashes of dancehall make the production outstanding, but Kabaka’s explosive flow and wordplay remain the centerpiece. This may be his strongest overall lyrical performance yet.
“Stand Firm” lights the fire immediately. Built around a powerful Peter Tosh introduction, Kabaka attacks the heavy riddim with sharp lyrics centered on truth, resistance, and spiritual strength. Pressure Busspipe matches his intensity perfectly, making the song a forceful opening statement.
“From Weh Day” keeps that fire burning as Kabaka addresses the state of reggae and dancehall, calling for greater balance, substance, and support for emerging conscious artists. Packed with observations and lyrical shout-outs, it demonstrates his deep love for the culture.
“Rebel Music (I’m Back)” may be my favorite track. Kabaka floats across a dope, ’70s-inspired groove with precision, while his smooth, melodic chorus adds sweetness without sacrificing lyrical strength.
“We Dem Wah” shifts into old-school hardcore dancehall. Kabaka and producer Jazzwad created an original retro-styled beat honoring ’90s sound-system culture and icons like Super Cat and Ninjaman. Kabaka rides it with authority, celebrating dancehall’s past without merely copying it.
The self-produced “Cyaa Cool Di Fyah” combines a driving roots bassline with a sharp hip-hop edge. Using fire as purification, Kabaka confronts corruption, corporate greed, and manufactured illusions with unyielding intensity.
“Higher Learning” dives further into his hip-hop roots, pairing Kabaka’s production with Fatbabs’ crisp drum programming. Over an underground boom-bap groove, his rapid-fire rhymes promote self-education, spiritual growth, and mental liberation.
“My Baby” provides a welcome change of pace with its sweet, laid-back groove and romantic delivery. “Rotation” then rides a bass-heavy rub-a-dub riddim as Kabaka calls on radio stations, DJs, and sound systems to keep meaningful reggae spinning. He presents the music as a source of truth, healing, and unity—not simply entertainment.
“Roll Up” settles into mellow acoustic guitar and percussion, celebrating the herb’s ability to relieve anxiety and clear the mind before the album’s explosive finale.
“Action” closes with a lyrical mic drop. Over a raw fusion of boom-bap and reggae consciousness, Kabaka unloads nearly continuous bars. After nine tracks of reflection and resistance, the title delivers the final instruction: turn the message into action.
The Lyrics Tape honors the sound that introduced Kabaka 15 years ago without becoming trapped in the past. The production is exceptional, but his inspired, purposeful lyricism makes the album special. This is Kabaka Pyramid at his sharpest, hungriest, and most complete—a Grammy-worthy release that deserves to be heard far beyond the reggae world.
