Is Record Store Day really helping Scotland’s independent record shops? In the early days, a small number of new or limited edition releases were produced specially for the event, and avid vinyl fans could only get their hands on copies by physically visiting a participating independent record shop on the day. But the number of releases has steadily grown, and this year hundreds of bands have agreed to participate – everyone from the Libertines to Justin Bieber seem to have a special release. And despite the increased participation and the so-called vinyl revival, record shops across Scotland are still closing down.

Record Store Day 2016: Manchester & Liverpool: It’s that time of year again as we look ahead to Record Store Day (Saturday 16 April), the annual global celebration of our beloved bevy of independent record shops – and the culture that comes with them. And while RSD is met with the occasional shutdown – fuelled by questions of whether the major labels are eating up resources to make a quick vinyl buck (inevitable), ‘Why don’t we celebrate vinyl culture year round?’ (pedantic) and so on – we suggest you simply embrace the inclusivity and positivity behind it, and the many goings-on in your city.

Crosby, Stills & Nash founder in Scarborough for Record Store Day: The seminal voice of ’70s supergroup Crosby Stills & Nash, comes to Scarborough next week for Record Store Day. On April 16th singer Graham Nash presses the flesh at Bull Moose to celebrate vinyl, meet fans and tout his new solo album: “This Path Tonight,” which drops that day. The songwriter is a founding member of the feel good Woodstock era band and English pop group The Hollies. This is his first record in 14 years.

Record Store Day’s Hottest Special Releases — From David Bowie to Vintage Madonna: Vinyl and cassettes are experiencing an unlikely renaissance, but the brick-and-mortar mom-and-pop stores built to sell them are closing in droves. Enter Record Store Day (RSD), an annual celebration of independent music shops across the globe, now in its ninth year. More than 350 special releases — think limited runs, unreleased rarities and new artwork — will be pressed exclusively for the 2016 edition on April 16, including these five must-grabs.

Here’s what Tower Records in Dublin have planned for next weekend’s Record Store Day: Record Store Day is just over a week away, and independent music stores around Ireland are accordingly gearing up for the annual celebration. Being Ireland’s largest independent record store, Tower Records on Dublin’s Dawson Street always lays on a decent spread of merch and entertainment, and this year is no different. Playing live instore throughout the day (Saturday, April 16th) from 12pm – 6pm will be September Girls, Fangclub, Wolff, Black Bank Folk and The Young Folk.

Could keeping your vinyl records make you a better parent? Even music fans who haven’t had a working turntable in decades can benefit by holding onto their vinyl. Most of us remember flipping through our parents’ LPs and singles and asking questions about music we liked, or album jackets or 45 sleeves that caught our attention. In my case, hearing Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie began discussions of civil rights demonstrations my parents attended in the 1960s and awareness of the activism behind much folk music.

London Record Store Day festival cancelled by roadworks: The street party that has taken over Soho on Record Store Day in previous years will not take place this year, with organisers citing “roadworks in the area” as the cause. One of the event’s saving graces in recent years, with a live stage on Berwick Street and a number of sound systems outside local shops creating a carnival atmosphere, the street party was also responsible for driving huge footfall to local shops selling limited edition releases on the day. A spokeswoman for Sister PR, which represents Berwick Street on behalf of landlords Shaftesbury, said: “There is not going to be a music festival on this year. Due to roadworks in the area, it won’t be able to go ahead.”
