This year’s celebration falls on Saturday, April 20, and we’ve got details on the exclusive releases offered on the day and where around town you can find them. This year’s RSD ambassadors are our Nashville neighbors, Paramore, who became newly independent after their decades-long contract with Atlantic Records ended late last year. Following tradition, the band has a few RSD exclusives of their own.

Washington, DC | Vinyl shops around DC to celebrate Record Store Day with exclusives and concerts: There’s no feeling quite like dropping the needle of a turntable on the smooth vinyl of a record and embarking on a sonic journey with your favorite album. Record Store Day, which falls on April 20 this year, is an annual celebration of independent record stores observed by hoards of vinyl collectors in search of RSD-exclusive editions by artists from Charlie Parker to Sabrina Carpenter. Participating stores select from a list of about 400 RSD-specific editions to sell for the holiday, some pairing highly sought-after records with giveaways and live performances. Pioneered in 2007 by Baltimore-based record store owners, RSD aims to reignite the frenzy for vinyl at brick-and-mortar stores, especially after a decrease in vinyl sales in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Record stores across the District are celebrating the holiday with exclusive performances and special-edition vinyls.

Stroud, UK | Stroud gets into the Record Store Day groove: This Saturday, April 20th, is Record Store Day 2024 (RSD), an event which celebrates the UK’s independent record shops. Sound Records in George Street, run by Tom Berry, will once again be joining in – one of only two stores in the whole of Gloucestershire. Sean Roe’s Klang Tone Records in Lansdown hasn’t signed up for RSD but has plans to mark the day. “I’ll be putting out around 200 records especially held back for the day – rarities and unusual LPs – I’ll promote on Instagram in the week leading up to the day, and we also have live sessions in the shop,” said Sean. The first of the two free live performances takes place at 4.30pm and features Louis Giannamore, composer, artist and drummer. His debut LP World Tour! Is a catalogue of songs created using only iPhone memos and field recordings, recorded on tour, across several countries and continents in 2023.

What started as an honest-to-goodness movement to encourage listeners to get out and support independent music retailers who were suffering in the advent of Amazon, streaming services, and the industry’s stark shift from physical to digital formats has quickly mutated into a halfhearted “holiday” with its fair share of icky elements. Amid the ugliness of desperate novelty records and greedy “collectors” re-listing rarities on eBay while they’re still waiting in line to pay, some Milwaukee-area record shops, local bands, and other area businesses are doing their part to make this happening a worthwhile occurrence for all. On Saturday, April 20, the consumer event will basically be a full-fledged local holiday, complete with the debut of a brand new record store (!!!), sales and giveaways galore, in-store shows, and much more.

Known for its eye-catching Elvis Costello mural the store stocks a variety of genres and new and collectable records. On record store day the store will have exclusive items in-shop and online from the April 20 – 21. A staff member from 81 Renshaw said: “It’s a nice day, everyone chats, there’s a buzz.”

CO | Record Store Day 2024 comes with events across Colorado: Twenty-nine record stores across Colorado are participating in Record Store Day 2024, which falls on Saturday, April 20. Record Store Day was created in 2007 by independent record store owners and staff to celebrate the unique culture of record businesses worldwide, and to help cultivate enthusiasm for physical recordings in an era of increasingly online listening. The day is celebrated each April and features exclusive vinyl, CD, and promotional products, along with various events like in-store performances, artist meet-and-greets, and more. Independent labels and distributors produce most of the Record Store Day Official Release List. Wax Trax Records, the oldest continuously operating record store in Colorado, is hosting Record Store Day at two locations for the first time in its nearly 50 years of operations.

Worcester, MA | Beautiful Music: That’s Entertainment, Joe’s Albums to host Record Store Day. That’s Entertainment has never skimped on Record Store Day. The “pop culture emporium,” best known for its comic book collection and geeky fun collectibles, has always brought in a great mix of local favorite artists and up-and-comers to entertain the crow of vinyl enthusiasts who show up early for a shot at grabbing a limited release albums. … “It’s really important to small, independent record stores,” says Joe Demers, owner of Joe’s Albums on Main Street in Worcester, as well as a store in Northampton. Demers explains that, “there are releases that specifically only come out that day. They’re short runs … only available in-store at independent record stores that day.” Demers says he’s excited by a number of the releases, but expects the most prominent will be a single with pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo singing rising star Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” on one side, and Kahan covering Rodrigo’s “Lacy” on the other.
