Truck Store in Cowley Road, and Truck Store in Witney, formerly Rapture, were packed with customers all day on Saturday. Record Store Day is a global celebration of independent record store culture, and is dedicated to shining a spotlight on the shops that support music fans all year round. On the day itself, hundreds of highly limited releases were available exclusively from indie record stores, all on a first-come, first-served basis. Music fans bought special edition RSD releases including Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and The Colourfield.
Edinburgh, UK | Edinburgh record store owner has equipment returned following theft: An Edinburgh record store owner has had some of his equipment returned after what appeared to be a brazen theft on Saturday which was Record Store Day. Darren Yeats, the owner of VoxBox Music in Stockbridge, was preparing to make his way to St Vincent’s Chapel for a Record Store Day celebration on Saturday when some of his equipment was purloined. He left an amp and some cables on the pavement outside his building while he re-entered his flat for a couple minutes to say goodbye to his wife. A man approached unnoticed while Darren was inside and made off with his Marshall amplifier, cables and chargers, as well as a bag which was a gift from his mother. …Good news was also just round the corner for Darren, as the very man who was caught on a neighbour’s CCTV camera making off with the goods appeared at his door on Tuesday to humbly return the amp and bag.
Doylestown, PA | Record Store Day Draws Crowd At Siren Records: The Doylestown shop offered exclusive merchandise for Record Store Day on Saturday. He was the first in line, showing up with a chair and a book at 4:19 a.m. on Saturday. The man was among the vinyl fans who showed up early and often at Siren Records for Record Store Day on Saturday, considered the best of the two days devoted each year to the exclusive offerings. Among some titles that fans flocked to Siren Records for were live shows from Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Yes, the Power Station, and The Cars, among others. Other exclusive offerings were a box set or the first solo records from Crosby, Stills, and Nash, two Brian Wilson records, a Taylor Swift single, two from David Bowie, a remix of Elton John songs, and a Rolling Stones item that included six 3-inch records, a crate, and a 3-inch record player.
Helston, UK | Fans queue just after midnight for Record Store Day, Helston: Record Store Day began early—very early—for Rotten Records in Helston, with the first fans taking their place in the queue just after midnight on Friday night (April 17). By around 4am the line had begun to grow, and by opening time it stretched from the shop door all the way up the alleyway to Wendron Street car park. Drivers slowed down in disbelief; with several people telling staff they had “never seen anything like it” for a Helston business. Owners Nick and his partner Ana said the level of support from both the local community and music lovers travelling from further afield “did the town proud.” Cornwall’s Rewind Radio rock DJ Dave Dowling set the tone for the day, bringing his own record player and PA system to spin vinyl outside the shop.
Evanston, IL | Animal Records celebrates Record Store Day: Evanston music lovers celebrated Record Store Day on Saturday by flocking downtown, where lines formed to await exclusive releases at stores like Animal Records. Greg Allen, the owner of Animal Records, orchestrated a weekend full of musical performances, giveaways and activities to celebrate the occasion. “It’s going to be huge,” he said. “We’re expecting we’ll probably have about twice the amount of traffic this year than we did last year.” …On Saturday, Allen and his employees brought records outside to the courtyard so that customers could enjoy the sunshine as they browsed. Allen also invited dogs from animal adoption center Wright-Way Rescue to the store. He said he chose the name “Animal Records” in part to reflect his intent to collaborate with animal shelters.
Johnstown, PA | Vinyl fans flock to George’s Song Shop for Record Store Day: Hours after George’s Song Shop opened Saturday for Record Store Day, a steady stream of people still flowed in, asking about specific releases, browsing the stacks and chatting with fellow vinyl lovers. “Every Record Store Day, they’re lined up,” owner John George said. “I’m glad to see it.” This year’s queue stretched from the door of the shop at 128 Market St. in downtown Johnstown to the corner of Main Street and a little further. One shopper took his spot at the front door, as he always does, George said, at 3:30 a.m. to ensure he can get in. Others lined up as early as 6 a.m., with the shop opening at 8 a.m. Nick Milkovich, a longtime friend of the owner and shop assistant, said the stock was moving quickly this year.
Nantwich, UK | Vinyl fans flock to Nantwich shop for biggest Record Store Day: Independent Applestump Records in Nantwich has thanked customers for their loyalty after hosting its most successful Record Store Day to date. The shop, on Oatmarket in the town centre, welcomed music lovers from across the region yesterday (April 18th) as part of Record Store Day UK. It’s a nationwide celebration uniting nearly 300 independent record shops around the country. Opening its doors at 8am, the shop saw more than 100 people queueing outside before opening. Some dedicated vinyl enthusiasts even arriving as early as 7.30pm the night before to secure the most sought-after limited releases. The annual event offered more than 500 exclusive records, drawing both seasoned collectors and casual fans. …This year marked the fifth Record Store Day hosted by Applestump Records, which has built a reputation locally for its vibrant celebrations and support of vinyl culture.
Halifax, CA | Record Store Day has lineups at local record shops starting at 2 a.m.: April 18 is Record Store Day, which prompts lineups across the Maritimes. At Taz Records in downtown Halifax, many waited outside several hours before open, and well before sunrise. “At this location 2 a.m. but at the Bedford shop 10 p.m.,” says Jimmy Donnelly, Taz Records owner and manager. This is an international date to celebrate independent record stores. Jimmy Donnelly, the owner of Taz Records, says interest has only increased over the years. “I used to have bands in here, I used to bring in donuts, as it grew and grew and grew and more and more people, I couldn’t really do things like that now it’s very much about the product,” says Donnelly. …“We have everything from K-POP Demon Hunters to Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Cam Ron, it goes on and on and on,” says Donnelly.
