Mossel Bay, ZA | Youth enjoying the vinyl vibe: The current generation is a touch-and-feel one. People like having the music in their hands, so vinyls are making a comeback.’ Long-playing (LP) records, previously collectors’ items of the older generation, are now popular among young people. This is according to a Mossel Bay secondhand store owner, Benjamin Nel. He has a large shop, more like a warehouse, in the town centre. Nel says some of the youth have a vintage LP player from a grandfather and they enjoy playing records. Music they are looking for is mainly classic rock and pop, such as the albums of The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen, Bryan Adams and more. Records are put to all sorts of other uses. One of Nel’s customers uses them to make handbags, combining them with leather. Records are used for home and wedding decor as well.

London, UK | Katy B launches new listening bar at KEF Music Gallery: Fancy doing something special for World Music Day? Well, Monkey Shoulder might have you sorted. Ahead of June 21, the whisky brand has teamed up with KEF Audio to launch a new record store and listening bar, featuring performances from DJs, excellent audio and premium cocktails. The pop-up, which opens at KEF Gallery on June 17, will be home to a collection of vinyl handpicked by seven of the most influential record stores in the UK, as well as artists Katy B, DJ Target and DJ Arthi. Fans will be able to dig through the vinyl and play them back in the KEF listening rooms, which boast high-fidelity architectural speakers, subwoofers and (in one instance) KEF’s flagship MUON speakers. The tracks, which span hip-hop and grim to electronica, were picked by a range of stores from around the UK with years of experience in the business

Battle of ‘The Big Three’: What is the best-selling music label of all time? “I don’t see a lot of money here,” says a faceless suit to Oscar Isaac’s painfully honest character in Inside Llewyn Davis. A cold, frank and very real response to a performance vulnerability. While I’d like to say we’ve wisened up in the 60 years since the setting of that film in the 1960s folk era, the realities of music labels remain very much the same. Streaming royalties have squeezed out any genuine profitability for artists, so instead, they’re left to make up their losses in the rather scratchy landscape of touring. And like all bureaucratic powerhouses, the major labels have acutely sensed the desperate situations artists find themselves in and, of course, capitalise.

“You can give them to the birds and bees”: Do northern soul records retain their value? …many of the records that typified northern soul came from unknown artists on tiny independent record labels. As such, these singles were often pressed in very small numbers and distributed locally in whatever city the label hailed from – typically places like Detroit, Chicago, or Philadelphia. As such, finding copies in the arse-end of nowhere in deepest, darkest Lancashire was like trying to locate a teardrop in the ocean. So, when copies of certain singles did find their way into the market, they often commanded a pretty penny. Flash-forward to the modern day, and the price of northern soul records only seems to be increasing.
