Delano, KS | Delano business to move, but customers can keep their same parking spaces: Kirsten and Adam Phillips were disappointed to learn they lost their lease for their Spektrum Muzik in Delano, but they’ve found several bright sides in having to move the record store. As they told their customers on Facebook, “the great news is that whatever parking spot you use currently when you visit us, will still work for the new location!” That’s because the new address at 112 S. Handley is about 300 feet from the current space at 905 W. Douglas. “It’s definitely a bummer to be losing that . . . Douglas access,” Kirsten Phillips said. However, she said the store is more than a decade old now and well known in the community, and social media and signs can direct customers to the new space, so she thinks it will be all right.

Brixton, UK | South London’s Universal Roots Records announces closure: The Brixton shop cited factors including gentrification, Brexit and the cost-of-living crisis as contributing to its closure. South London record shop Universal Roots Records is closing. The Brixton shop, which specialises in reggae, roots, dub, ska and lovers’ rock, confirmed that this Saturday, July 29th, will be its final day in business. It has been open since 2017. Founder Jah Lingwa, AKA Markie Lyrics, told Resident Advisor that the closure has been triggered by Brexit and the gentrification of Reliance Arcade–a narrow covered market for local traders in which the shop is located–and compounded by the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis. “It’s been challenging to pay the rent,” he said. “We used to post a lot of vinyl to customers in Europe but they can’t afford to buy it because of the amounts of tax incurred since Brexit.”

The Vaselines To Give ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ New Vinyl Pressing: Seminal Scottish indie pop group The Vaselines are to give their 1992 compilation ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ a new vinyl pressing. The band’s slim but potent discography has left a huge legacy, with a number of songwriters citing The Vaselines as an influence. Kurt Cobain was famously an evangelist for the Scottish duo, and Nirvana covered The Vaselines during their fantastic MTV Unplugged performance. 1992 compilation ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ gathers the core of their catalogue, a 19 track excursion into smutty humour, deft melodies, and soaring arrangements. Sub Pop are now giving the LP an all-new vinyl pressing, available on wax in its original form for the first time ever. Time to fall for Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee all over again… ‘The Way Of The Vaselines’ will be released on 2LP limited-edition coloured ‘Loser’ vinyl (Silver & Gold), 2LP black vinyl, and CD. There will also be a limited-edition coloured 2LP (Pink & Purple), photo and badge set available exclusively via Glasgow’s Monorail Music. All of these versions will include the original artwork.
Apparel Music launches 7″ vinyl series with MINI001 and MINI002: Apparel Music is launching a pretty cool seven inch series with two plates released in June and August respectively with a flared-out disco/funk sound. I’m not one for the novelty of the “mystery producer” – plenty of people put on a mask with a new alias all the time without drawing attention to it – but whoever it is they’re doing God’s work on these four tracks creatively titled “MINI001” and “MINI002” from the unknown producer “Apparel Wax.” The b-side of the first 7″ is a super-fine disco/soul instrumental. The A side of “MINI002″ has a crazy sax and stomping groove that I can’t quite place, but it occupies a nice niche in my head and now my record collection. Make more 7” series. The world needs them.
