Graded on a Curve:
Tony Bennett,
Tony Sings the Great
Hits of Today!

And pukes! Literally! Here’s the story—in 1970 Columbia Records head honcho Clive Davis, eager to resuscitate Tony Bennett’s faltering career by updating his sound, browbeat Bennett into singing the songs of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield, Richard Harris and the like—you know, freaky countercultural stuff, one small step away from Wild Man Fischer.

And Tony—a 100-percent Great American Songbook kind of guy—did what any great singer in his shoes would do. Threw up on them. Because he was backed into a corner and Captain Beefheart covers couldn’t be far away. He later recalled: “I started planning the record by listening to as many current hits as I could stand. I mean some of the songs made me physically nauseous.” The poor dear man. George Harrison’s “Something” has that effect on people.

Nausea, as we all know, is one small step away from actually blowing chunks, and that’s exactly what Bennett did come time to record such rancid hippie fare as “Eleanor Rigby” and the druggy “Little Green Apples.” Davis himself reported that Bennett vomited at the start of the sessions. Tony, a class act in all respects, used a more polite term: “I actually regurgitated when I made that awful album.”

Bennett was hardly alone in his aversion and disgust for the sounds of the younger generation. Way back in 1957 Frank Sinatra called rock and roll “the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear.” Ol’ Blue Eyes went on to say “It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons,” before dismissing it as a “rancid smelling aphrodisiac” and “the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the earth.”

A morning mix of news for the vinyl inclined

In rotation: 1/24/25

Escondido, CA | Escondido welcomes new record store to historic downtown: A passion for vintage vinyl and a community’s enthusiasm for physical media has sparked the opening of Escondido’s first record store in roughly 15 years, smack dab in historic downtown. Track City Records, which debuted in early December, aims to reignite a local appreciation for records and other physical music formats while creating a gathering space for music lovers. The shop, located at 105 W. Grand Avenue, occupies a space that once housed a photography studio and, before that, a wig shop. Owners Bel Dacumos and Aubrey Espiritu, both Escondido residents, transformed the site into a haven for vinyl enthusiasts. The journey to opening the store began as an effort to purge their individual record collections through pop-up sales. “We wanted to declutter and let go of some of our records,” Dacumos said.

Kingston, UK | Kingston’s Banquet Records among 18 UK record stores crowned ‘the greatest in the world.’ The Financial Times has curated a list of 38 record stores worldwide crowned as the “greatest in the world”, 18 of which are in the UK. Among the 18 in the FT’s list is our very own Banquet Records. But why did Banquet Records make the list? The FT says: “Come for the comprehensive edit of contemporary indie, rock and dance records – stay for the 200 gigs a year the shop puts on, whether in its intimate onsite space, the Pryzm nightclub around the corner or St John’s Church on the outskirts of town. Tickets are not expensive and sometimes free when you buy an album. “While many record stores rightly cherish the past, Banquet feels like it’s got its eye on the future.” Speaking about the store’s recognition in the Financial Times, Banquet Records’ Jon Tolley told KIngston Nub: “It’s great to get such recognition.”

Los Angeles, CA | LA’s dublab and In Sheep’s Clothing announce record sale to benefit wildfire relief: Los Angeles radio station dub lab and hi-fi hub In Sheep’s Clothing have announced a benefit record sale to support wildfire relief efforts. Set to take place at Sound & Vision at The Row DTLA on February 2nd, the community fundraiser and market will feature donated vinyl, audio gear, music books, tapes, CDs, collectibles and more. Select dublab residents will DJ, local café Senses will provide coffee, and Remember This Feeling will offer massage therapy. The event runs from 11 AM through 4 PM—all proceeds will go directly to musicians impacted by the wildfires. Ahead of the sale, dublab is still seeking donations for their inventory. Those interested in donating should fill out this form—they may also drop off or ship donations to dublab’s studio at 1035 W 24th St. through January 29th.

Hexham, UK | Snap Records store, Hexham supports Blue Spirit charity: The proceeds of a vinyl collection were donated to charity. Blue Spirit is a charity established in Hexham that helps young people experiencing mental health challenges, or facing social or economic disadvantage, to experience the freedom of sailing. It was established in memory of Laury Gratiet, who died of a mental illness at 21 years of age. Andy Lees, Laury’s uncle, sold approximately 60 records and a turntable to Snap Records in the town centre and donated the proceeds of £550 to Blue Spirit. Solen said: “This amount is a significant contribution to Blue Spirit and it will allow one young person to go on a five-day group sailing voyage from North Shields or Hartlepool, or will allow 16 young people a half-day dinghy sailing session on the Derwent Reservoir. “These experiences are potentially life-changing, and at the very least give young people the chance to do something that would normally be out of their reach and that will enhance their mental well-being.”

Graded on a Curve:
Flora Hibberd,
Swirl

Born in Britian and based in Paris, singer-songwriter Flora Hibberd makes a strong positive impression with her debut album Swirl, which is out now on ice blue transparent vinyl and digital via 22Twenty Records. Sturdy and pretty of voice and sharp with her lyrics, Hibberd’s music benefits from structural heft, depth of feeling, and stylistic range that’s aided by a fine backing band. The album’s eleven songs are fully formed as they predict a promising future for the artist.

Regarding Flora Hibberd, it should be mentioned that the promise began in 2021 with the release of the 10-inch EP “Hold,” its seven songs establishing a warm, folky sensibility blended with pop smarts and non-trite country shadings. Swirl doesn’t break with this introductory foundation, but rather enhances it with increased astuteness in execution.

With crisp guitar and a buoyant rhythm, Swirl’s opener “Auto Icon” leans toward the pop side of Hibberd’s spectrum, but with a clear classique singer-songwriter undercurrent. It has the feel of a sleeper hit, in part due to the appeal of Hibberd’s singing, which is far from wispy but stopping short of husky. Additionally, what she’s saying is worth hearing, but the construction of the songs is equally beneficial, allowing them to withstand repeated play and flourish, really get their hooks in.

“Remote Becoming Holy” is a harder hitting dose of pedal steel tinged folk-rock, subtly suggesting Neil Young. A whole album in this mode would be fine, but then “Code” shifts gears, returning to a pop template but injecting it with touches of the unusual. Next up is a turn toward gentle folk with “Every Incident Has Left Its Mark,” although the piece does gradually build up to a folk-rocky conclusion, complete with some guitar burn (and not so Neil-like, this time).

A morning mix of news for the vinyl inclined

In rotation: 1/23/25

London, UK | Seven London record stores have been named the ‘greatest in the world.’ Bursting with thousands of records, these are the best spots to bulk out your vinyl collection. Writers at the Financial Times recently published an impressive list of the top record stores on the entire planet – and in great news for London’s audiophile community, several stores in the capital made it into the mix. The FT’s list spanned some of the world’s biggest music cities, from New York and Paris to Sydney. Several places in the UK, including Leeds, Edinburgh and Stroud, also made the cut – in other words, London’s record shops were in very good company. So, which shops featured?

Edinburgh, UK | We visited the Edinburgh record store named in list of ‘best in the world.’ After The Financial Times named a Bruntsfield record store among the best in the world, we headed over to see what all the fuss was about and spoke to owner Mark Thorne who told us the secret to his success. An Edinburgh record store has been named among the best in the world, and we nipped over to Bruntsfield to see what all the fuss was about. Thorne Records was crowned by The Financial Times alongside 37 other record stores across the globe that are ‘go to venues for a vinyl fix’. Mark Thorne, who opened the store back in 2022, feels the key to his success comes from keeping sales in store and forming bonds with the community. We paid a visit to the store on a dour afternoon, that was immediately brightened by the chipper and welcoming yellow walls of Thorne. Mark was happy to take some time to have a chat, something that clearly keeps locals coming back.

Bayonne, NJ | Bayonne is Finally Getting a Record Store: 14a Records to Open 1/24. Although The Hoboken Girl typically focuses its coverage solely on Hoboken + Jersey City, the HG team is shining on spotlight on Bayonne today, as this nearby city is welcoming its first record store in years. 14a Records, which will sell new + vintage records, tapes, CDs, and rare imported vinyl, will be a one-stop shop for all things music. This spot will officially open on Friday, January 24th at 952 Broadway in Bayonne. 14a Records (formerly known as Disco De Facto) is a record business owned by Bayonne resident Robert Henry. Robert, who has over 20 years of record buying experience, according to the store’s website, shared via Instagram that he plans to open a brick-and-mortar shop at 952 Broadway. 14a Records, which will be Bayonne’s first record store to come to the city in years, will soft open on January 24th, 2025.

US | Post Malone named Record Store Day 2025 ambassador: Post Malone doesn’t need any help to be the official Record Store Day 2025 ambassador. In his new role, the rapper-turned-pop star-turned-country star will be encouraging folks to shop in their local independent record stores on April 12. “What an honor,” says Posty in a statement. “Record Store Day is so important, and I really hope to do my part to keep it alive.” “We love hitting local shops when we’re on the road, seeing all the crazy artwork … the whole energy in a record store is just super inspiring,” he continues. “I feel at home. It’s really an unexplainable feeling to hit up a shop and dig through crates, just see what grabs your eye. You can be looking for something super specific and end up finding something totally different. It’s the best.”

TVD Radar: Studio Electrophonique The Sheffield space age, from The Human League to Pulp by Jamie Taylor in stores 4/25

VIA PRESS RELEASE | Manchester University Press is delighted to announce the forthcoming release of Studio Electrophonique by writer and filmmaker Jamie Taylor. Scheduled for publication in April 2025, this is the amazing story of the home studio in Sheffield that helped launch some of Britain’s most beloved bands.

The Sheffield space age began in 1961, when local mechanic Ken Patten won a tape-recording competition by recreating the sound of a rocket launch using a pencil and a bicycle pump. In the decades that followed, the makeshift home studio he constructed became the launch pad for a group of young musicians who would shape the futuristic sound of 1980s pop. The Human League, Heaven 17, Pulp, ABC and others made their early recordings with Ken, whose DIY ethic was the perfect fit for a city facing industrial decline but teeming with ideas.

Studio Electrophonique tells the story of a generation seeking new frontiers in music, using everything they could lay their hands on—from science fiction novels to glam rock, Dada art and cheap electronics—to get there. Drawing on original interviews with Jarvis Cocker, Martyn Ware, Mark White and others, it brings to light a world of humour, charm, creativity, and unfounded yet undaunted self-belief.

Jamie Taylor is a writer and filmmaker from Sheffield. He is the director of The Campaigners and A Film about Studio Electrophonique. Studio Electrophonique is the second book in MUP’s exciting new British Pop Archive series, edited by industry luminaries including Jon Savage, John Robb, Adelle Stripe, and BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, the series aims to entertain, inform, and uncover untold stories from the realm of music, popular culture, and counterculture.

Graded on a Curve:
Joni Mitchell,
Archives – Volume 4
The Asylum Years
(1976–1980)

Since launching in October of 2020, the various Joni Mitchell archive releases have become among the better series to offer archival and reissue projects from a major artist. Mitchell’s peerless place in music is secure but these releases serve to bolster and enhance her lofty place in the pantheon of pop music from the past nearly 60 years.

The latest release in the Joni Mitchell Archives box set series is the fourth volume. These releases feature mostly previously unreleased material, including primarily live performances and demos. This latest release, available on CD and vinyl, explores perhaps her most experimental period—1976–1980—and focuses for the most part on music from the albums Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, and Mingus, although some of the performances and songs pre-date 1976.

Mitchell’s previous album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, actually signaled the beginning of this rich and fertile period of bold experimentation. Short-sighted critics (many primarily East Coast based male critics that at the time coalesced around the burgeoning New York and London-based punk scenes) were not kind to much of this music when it was first released, but listening to these live versions and demos from the period only reinforces just how extraordinary the music was and how well it has held up.

This is music from an artist with unparalleled compositional prowess and genre-defying musical dexterity. Her musical command is otherworldly. Mitchell operates on a musical plane that other artists couldn’t even imagine. These recordings are based on songs drawn on a wide canvas. And it is Mitchell’s other life as a painter that informs the full breadth of the music.

Graded on a Curve:
Mogwai,
The Bad Fire

With the imminent release of The Bad Fire, Scottish post-rockers Mogwai are now eleven full-length records deep into a discography that has grown with steady diligence since the band’s formation in the mid-1990s. Their sound has evolved across that span, but there may be no bigger stylistic jump in their body of work than the ten tracks on their latest. A bold excursion cohering into a satisfying whole that feels borne from necessity, it’s out January 24 on 3LP+CD+photo book deluxe and 2LP editions, 2CD, cassette and digital via Rock Action Records in the UK and Temporary Residence Limited in the US.

When Mogwai first hit the scene, they fit into the burgeoning post-rock category pretty well. Clearly influenced by Slint while resisting a soundalike scenario, the band flourished in the slow lane in terms of tempo, often angular but over time just as likely to connect like a less dour Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or to glide and glisten in a manner similar to Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Rós. Interestingly, producer John Congleton, who’s worked with the latter two bands, lend his expertise to The Bad Fire’s three singles (“God Gets You Back,” “Lion Rumpus,” and “Fanzine Made of Flesh”).

Bands often stagnate by adhering too closely to their foundational sound. Happily, this is not the case with Mogwai. “God Gets You Back” opens The Bad Fire with what can fairly be described as a techno atmosphere, though by the end of its six and a half minutes the pace quickens and takes on a rock-ish thrust. It’s in the following track “Hi Chaos” where the ambiance turns recognizably Mogwai, but still moving fairly speedily with dynamic shifts that lay down a shoegaze-like distortion.

The fuzz resurfaces in “What Kind of Mix is This?” as the band leans into a sort of post-rock psychedelia while conjuring a fair among of thud, and then “Fanzine Made of Flesh” is an unabashed rocker with vocals that insinuate one of Georgio Moroder’s distant cousins was invited to the party. “Pale Vegan Hip Pain” moves at a more gradual clip, and like “Hi Chaos,” it’s nearer to the template Mogwai sound. This scenario carries over and blossoms during “If You Find This World Bad, You Should See Some of the Others.”

Rapid City, ND | The Growing Appeal of Vinyl Records in 2025: Listening to music is easier than ever, being able to stream from your phone. Yet vinyl sales hit 23 million units sold in 2024 according to Billboard. Listening to music is easier than ever, being able to stream from your phone. Yet vinyl sales hit 23 million units sold in 2024 according to Billboard. Although digital media dominates the music space, physical media still has a place for some people. Some people prefer reading a good old-fashioned book over using a Kindle. The experience at black hills vinyl is similar. People who want to own physical music have a place to find new vinyl records to add to their collection. Michael Calabrese the co-owner of Black Hills Vinyl said, “I think really what it boils down to is being able to actually own something, to have something in your hand, to open it up and hold it and look at the artwork, and really the time invested in the music. And really, whether it’s vinyl or those other formats, those offer something just above and beyond what streaming does. Kind of the difference between like a home-cooked meal and fast food.”

Liverpool, UK | Liverpool record shop the oldest of its kind in England: A Liverpool family-run shop has become the oldest independent record store in England. The Musical Box in Tuebrook has been run by four generations of the same family since it was opened in 1947. The shop first sold toys and LPs to customers before becoming a much-loved record shop. Grandmother Diane Cain has been associated with the shop for its entire 77 year history. The shop was originally owned by Diane’s uncle Jack Lewis, and later by her mother, Dorothy. Today, the business is run by Diane’s son Tony Quinn and his wife Paula, with her grandsons also helping and running the social media accounts. Paula says the family are delighted that their independent record shop is the oldest in the country. “We were aware that we were Liverpool’s oldest record shop, but with so many customers constantly saying we must be the oldest in the country, we decided to enquire. “We thought it would be fitting for Diane, who is second generation, to be able to know, with her being 87 year sold. Our customers are so happy for us, to know their local record shop is the oldest.

Budapest, HU | Hungarian record store proudly makes it to world rankings: A Hungarian record store has achieved notable recognition by being included in the Financial Times world rankings. Kalóz Records, based in Budapest, has earned a spot on the prestigious list, joining renowned stores in New York, London, and Stockholm. The Financial Times praises the Budapest shop in a brief review, describing it as small but a place where visitors can spend hours browsing. The store offers a diverse range of music, including Hungarian progressive music, techno, classic Indian raga and a unique selection of records from behind the old Iron Curtain. While there are no dedicated turntables for listening, the staff will gladly play a record of your choice upon request. Kalóz Records expressed their delight on Instagram: “The Financial Times, a prestigious music magazine, has published a list of the best record shops in the world, and we’re in it…”

Los Angeles, CA | Album donation drive: Help this record shop help fire evacuees find their music: Record Safari in Los Angeles is accepting vinyl donations, both “new and used”; find how to contribute. A favorite song, a beloved musician, our go-to group, the album we’d take to a desert island: The beautiful ballads and rocking anthems of our lives have bolstered us when we required bolstering and provided some solace when a sense of peace was desperately needed. Alex Rodriguez, the owner of the music shop Record Safari, wanted to help the people who’ve lost their homes and the album collections they held dear. Soon after the fires started, Mr. Rodriguez sent the call out to shop fans and music lovers across Southern California and beyond: Any record donations, “new and used,” would be accepted at the Los Feliz Boulevard shop. These could be “records you haven’t listened to in awhile” or records created by your label or your band, if you work in the music business. Or even a favorite disc that you want to pass along to someone who could find inspiration and hope in the songs you love best.

Graded on a Curve:
The Troggs,
Best of The Troggs

Celebrating Chris Britton on his 81st birthday.Ed.

You’ve heard of rock music? Well, these English trogolodytes played real rocks. Legend has it the members of The Troggs were discovered as feral children living in the vicinity of Cheddar Gorge in the mid-1950s, where they romped about naked and walked on all fours. Five years of English lessons, some rudimentary musical training, and learning how not to hoot and waggle their genitalia at the sight of females of the species later, they were ready to bring their ludicrously crude garage rock to the listening public.

Here in the US The Troggs are primarily (if not exclusively) known for the cave man stomp “Wild Thing,” but in England’s green and pleasant land they scored a fair number of hits, which is where 1967’s Best of the Troggs comes in. You may not have wanted to let these guys anywhere near a live chicken (the results were invariably bloodcurdling), but their early work holds up as a prime example of the sonic possibilities of inspired primitivism.

To the extent that the Troggs are labeled a proto-punk band, it has less to do with attitude (Reg Presley and the boys didn’t have a rebellious or mean-spirited bone in their bodies) than with their determination to prove that any rough beast could slouch its way towards the Top of the Pops. What the Troggs offer the listener are a bunch of likable songs banged out with an equally likable amateur spirit; it bears remembering that it took years to teach these lads how to use knife and fork, and their learning curve more or less ended there.

That said, they’re not exactly the neanderthals you might think, and if you’re expecting every track to be a barbaric yawp along the lines of “Wild Thing” you’re in for a disappointment. A few songs do the crunge: “From Home” features some nasty fuzz guitar and is heavy as a club, while “Gonna Make You” is all cock-sure assertion set to a badass Bo Diddley beat.
