TVD Live Shots: Genesis at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, 11/30

It was a busy Tuesday night in downtown Cleveland, as a sold-out crowd filed into Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse to see Genesis for one last time.

The Last Domino? Tour is the band’s first since 2007 and the final of their career. Led by a solid backing band, the three original members—Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford—busted out all the hits for the occasion. In recent years, Collins has been battling severe nerve damage that’s forced him to retire from the drums, but his signature voice remains unaffected. His son, Nic, now drums while Dad sings front and center.

Aside from sounding wonderful, Genesis looks great thanks to the spectacular light production. The tour carries on through 2022, so you still have plenty of opportunity to see them before their official retirement.

TVD Radar: Paul McCartney and
Wings, Wild Life 50th anniversary reissue
in stores 2/4

VIA PRESS RELEASE | Marking today’s 50th anniversary of the December 7, 1971 release of Paul McCartney and Wings’ Wild Life, UMe announces the February 4, 2022 reissue of Wings’ debut LP as a limited edition half-speed mastered vinyl pressing. Pre-Order the 50th Anniversary Limited Edition of Wild Life HERE.

Following the eclectic charm and intimacy of 1970’s solo McCartney and 1971’s homespun lo-fi indie-pop progenitor RAM credited to Paul and Linda McCartney, Wild Life found Paul once again redefining his post-Beatles creative identity, this time beginning his tenure as a founding member of Wings. A rollicking left turn from its predecessors, Wild Life was recorded in barely more than a week, with more than half of the songs captured in a single take.

The end result would be eight songs running the gamut from joyous freewheeling jams to proto-chamber pop to spare introspective musings—all bristling with a raw, jagged energy akin to the grungiest of garage bands—whether on the careening blues-rock rave-up of opener “Mumbo,” a reggae-tinged reimagining of Mickey & Sylvia’s “Love Is Strange,” or the plaintive and heart wrenching ballad “Dear Friend.”

Cracking the top 10 and going gold in the US, Wild Life faced an admittedly uphill battle as the debut of Paul’s first post-Beatles band. In a recent reassessment, Billboard noted that modern-day Wild Life listeners “can throw out all this cultural baggage and just enjoy the tunes… by not reaching for any obvious Beatles tropes, Wings achieved something fresh and inviting…”

UK Artist of the Week: LibraLibra

Get ready to rock out with LibraLibra and their punk-infused new single “Candy Mountain,” out now. Turn this one up loud and annoy your neighbours. Go on, it’s Christmas.

With a riot grrrl energy that Bikini Kill would be proud of, LibraLibra take no prisoners on their latest cut, “Candy Mountain.” The single is packed with a punch from the offset as pulsating drum beats are met with raucous guitar twangs and front woman Beth Cannon’s incredibly dynamic and breathtaking vocals taking centre stage.

Talking about the single, LibraLibra explain, “This is a full blown revenge song. I wanted to set the scene of survivor rage, joining forces and triumphing over their abuser. There is power and strength in numbers, hence the choral themes within. It’s a fantasy, a daydream of taking back control and defeating evil. It’s that self-realisation within the song where you realise how quick sexual escapades can turn from fun to tainted.

It again explores the idea of consent, and how maybe the idea of sexual desire is very different in reality. It attempts to acknowledge that young women are allowed to dream and explore those dreams, but if we don’t want to follow through, we are 100 percent allowed to say no.”

“Candy Mountain” is in stores now.

Graded on a Curve:
Trini Lopez,
The Rare Reprise Singles

Singer and guitarist Trini Lopez was one of the first Latin pop crossover artists, emerging in the early 1960s with his success persisting deep into the decade. Along with his hits, Lopez’s reputation largely rests on a pair of big-selling live albums that effectively kick-started his career. Omnivore Recordings’ new CD The Rare Reprise Singles illuminates the man’s abilities in the studio across 24 non-LP A- and B-sides. Trading performance verve for varying degrees of finesse, the disc spotlights Lopez’s considerable skills as an interpreter of songs and offers a few solid examples of his own writing. It’s available now.

Timeliness alert: those looking for non-overplayed Christmas songs to soundtrack their holiday soirees are in luck with The Rare Reprise Singles, as it includes Lopez’s 1968 45, “El Niño Del Tambor (The Little Drummer Boy)” b/w “Noche De Paz (Silent Night) / Let There Be Peace.” a double-dose of yuletide vibes that’s enjoyable if not a mindblower. Lopez had the voice for this material, and his singing in Spanish adds appeal, so it’s not at all bad as far as Christmas tunes go.

Contemporary relevance alert: The Rare Reprise Singles opens with “A-Me-Ri-Ca,” its lyrics written by that great man of the 20th century musical theater Stephen Sondheim, who passed from cardiovascular disease at age 91 on November 26 of this year, just a few days ago as of this writing. Lopez died from complications from Covid-19 at age 83 in August of 2020.

Furthermore, “A-Me-Ri-Ca” was written in collaboration with Leonard Bernstein for the 1957 Broadway play West Side Story, which was adapted into a film in 1963 (surely the impetus for Lopez’s song, which was released the same year) directed by Robert Wise, and with a fresh adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg (with a screenplay by Tony Kushner) due in theaters this Friday, December 10.

Washington, DC | 6 Best Vinyl Record Shops in Washington DC: Washington, D.C. has long served as a home to influential political movements, but did you know it has birthed major musical movements, too? The D.C. hardcore movement of the late ’70s and early ’80s was one of the most influential punk scenes in the United States, and record stores like Smash Records carry on the movement’s legacy with an impressive selection of hardcore punk vinyl. Also born in the district in the ’60s and ’70s, the go-go scene took over the world and remains popular in the D.C. area where it was named the “official music” of the city in 2020. You can find D.C.’s own legacy on wax in shops like Som Records. Beyond D.C.-born music, music lovers can find nearly any genre on vinyl in these six shops within the district.

Fairfield, OH | Three Feather Records wants people to discover and rediscover music: For the longest time, Eric DePrato and his sons, Jack and Mitchell, didn’t know what to do with the retail space they leased, but they knew it would be a record shop. “I don’t know anything about retail, and the boys, they don’t know anything about it,” Eric said of himself and his sons Jack, 21, and Mitchell, 17. So after about a year of uncertainty and second-guessing decisions, on Nov. 12, they opened Three Feather Records at 1105 Magie Ave. in Fairfield. “Finally we said we were tired of messing around and we’ve got to make a decision and go with it. It’s whatever we found on Pintrest.” The store’s name is a tribute to Maria DePrato, Eric’s wife of 20 years and the boy’s mother, who died four years ago from complications of lung cancer. And it’s also a subtle tribute to Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman whose music helped the three as they grieved Maria’s death. They also have a large Dave Grohl mural on the back of the store.

Cincinnati, OH | Cincinnati’s 11 best record stores: Discovering good new Music is one of the nicest feelings in the world. While finding new Music on large internet platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and others is exciting, there’s nothing quite like personally discovering some hidden gems. I’m referring to browsing record stores for vinyl records. Walking into a store, browsing through records, and discovering something completely new to take home is a thrilling experience. And statistics reveal that vinyl is rapidly regaining popularity. Look at the chart below, which shows vinyl sales by year since the 1970s, courtesy of Digital Music News: Fortunately for those who live in Cincinnati, there are multiple record stores strewn across the city with rows upon rows of vinyl to peruse. We’ve compiled a list of the top 11 record stores in Cincinnati.

Milwaukee, WI | Antonia’s 365 Hip-Hop Museum is a Collection Curated in a Love for Vinyl: If Antonia Anderson could travel back in time to give herself one piece of advice, she’d probably tell herself to stock up on milk crates because there’s no way she’d tell herself to stop collecting vinyl records. Taking a stroll through Anderson’s house is like traveling through history. Guests are greeted with red carpet and some of hip-hop’s most legendary acts. From Run-D.M.C. and Wu-Tang Clan, to Tupac Shakur and N.W.A., the walls are covered in memorabilia. Records are stacked to the ceiling. Cassette and VHS tapes line the walls. Anderson’s house is a hip-hop history museum. It started with one Motown vinyl and turned into a decade of rummaging through record bins and scouring online for collectables. Whether it’s her Public Enemy comic book or the KRS-One “Stop the Violence” educational program—Anderson’s got it all.

TVD Radar: Impulse! Records’ celebrates 60th anniversary with short film, ‘6 on 60’

VIA PRESS RELEASE | In celebration of Impulse! Records’ 60th anniversary this year, famed director and photographer, Atiba Jefferson, has created an engaging short film about the significance and continued cultural relevance of the orange-and-black record label known as the House That Trane Built.

Titled “6 on 60,” the mini doc features interviews with six artists from a variety of fields spanning the worlds of jazz, punk, funk, rock and skateboarding: legendary jazz stalwart Ahmad Jamal, who released some of his best records on Impulse! throughout the late ‘60s and early ‘70s; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bassist, Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers; noted vinyl enthusiast, radio show host and seminal punk rocker, Henry Rollins; professional skateboarder, photographer and musician, Ray Barbee, and contemporary artists Brandee Younger and Shabaka Hutchings of Sons of Kemet, representing the new vanguard of jazz and the new class of Impulse! Records.

“Impulse has been the soundtrack to my life, from my childhood to today, and I still play these records daily,” says Atiba Jefferson. “As a photographer I was always captivated by the photography and design—like everything about Impulse it has only gotten better with age. I had the idea to tell the stories of people and how they related to Impulse’s amazing 60-year history. I wanted to tell these narratives from the perspective of people from disparate worlds, from skateboarding to punk to funk to even the label’s artists of today and yesterday. It’s a story that is still being told and I’m glad to be able to help share it.”

For 60 years, the legendary Impulse! Records has been home to the greatest jazz artists of all time, including John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Quincy Jones, and more. The orange-and-black imprint was a cultural beacon of progressivism, spiritualism, and activism throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Today, the label thrives with an exciting new wave of jazz artists including Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, Brandee Younger, Ted Poor and more.

TVD Radar: Christian Death, Only Theatre of Pain 40th anniversary expanded reissue with photo book in stores 1/2022

VIA PRESS RELEASE | Frontier Records and Cult Epics announced today that iconic American Goth band Christian Death’s landmark debut album Only Theatre of Pain is set for a 40th anniversary reissue in January 2022 featuring an oversized hardcover book by famed Los Angeles punk rock photographer Edward Colver from Cult Epics books. In honor of Only Theatre of Pain’s 40th anniversary, Lisa Fancher, founder of Frontier Records, created an exclusive, double-vinyl gatefold Only Theatre of Pain album including a separate disc of digitally remastered demos and outtakes, and a bonus photo poster, for the upcoming box set.

This 40th Anniversary Edition is the only book authorized by the estate of founding member Rozz Williams and founding band members Rikk Agnew, James McGearty, and George Belanger. The oversized 12” x 12” book features rare and never-before-seen photos as well as new interviews with Colver and the surviving Christian Death band members. During this time, Edward Colver befriended the band and followed them around in late 1981 and early 1982 at more than a dozen concerts as well as photo shoots in Rozz Williams’ family home (used on the back cover of Only Theatre of Pain) and a session of now famous images at a cemetery in Pomona.

“Finally, fans of the real Christian Death will know how closely I worked with them and get to see a lot of the photographs that I shot during that time,” said photographer Edward Colver.

Christian Death was formed by Rozz Williams in Los Angeles, California in 1979. Williams was eventually joined by guitarist Rikk Agnew of Adolescents, James McGearty on bass guitar, and George Belanger on drums. It was this Christian Death line-up that was responsible for recording the band’s most iconic 1982 debut, widely agreed to be the #1 American goth album of all time.

Graded on a Curve: Various Artists, Songs of the Humpback Whale

On December 15, 2004 international book, film, and would-be musical artist Moby Dick bullied his way into Los Angeles’ famed recording studio the Record Plant, where he proceeded to destroy $398,000 in recording equipment. “We got off easy,” said engineer Donny “Awesome” Tong. “Squeeze 27,000 tons of pissed-off blubber into a relatively small space and I’m surprised anything was left.”

Police apprehended Dick at West Hollywood’s Viper Room. When asked what led to his rampage Mr. Dick replied “They say sperm whales can’t sing. But you should hear my take on ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.’ Kills ‘em at the Karaoke bar.”

Dick is a good singer, but he has nothing on the humpback whale, who’s famed for the beauty of its singing. The proof lies in 1970’s Songs of the Humpback Whale. Its 127 tracks were compiled by the late Dr. Roger Payne, the biologist and environmentalist responsible for compiling the field recordings that make up 1973’s award-winning Snap, Crackle & Pop: The Sounds of Children Eating Delicious Breakfast Cereals.

In the compilation’s liner notes, environmentalist Lars Van Greif writes, “People think all humpback whales sound alike. This is the equivalent of saying Glenn Danzig sounds like Justin Bieber. Common wisdom has it male humpbacks sing to attract chicks. But there’s evidence to suggest their songs are also trash-talking challenges to other males. Your male humpbacks are always looking for a fearsome fin fight. And I can tell you now, Justin Bieber wouldn’t stand a chance.”

Wolverhampton, UK | Wolverhampton record shop to close tomorrow after more than 50 years selling music: A popular city centre record store is set to close its doors for the last time at the weekend. Oldies Unlimited in Wolverhampton will close its shop on Darlington Street on Saturday, December 4, marking the end of more than 50 years of record sales and band signings in the city. The shop was initially due to close on November 30, but is being kept open until the weekend when it will shut its doors for good. Owner Simon Malpas said the plan for the business going forwards was to run it online, shipping out records and posters through the Facebook page, as well as joining record fairs across Wolverhampton. Mr Malpas said it had been a difficult decision to close, but said the business would go on and thanked customers for their support. He said: “I just want to offer an immense thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last 50 years.

Tampa, FL | Seminole Heights record shop staple Microgroove celebrates 10-year anniversary this weekend: The dark lord of surf-rock, Mrenc plays the tunes. In the decade Microgroove has been open the Seminole Heights record shop—owned by New Granada label head Keith Ulrey—has been in a Buccaneers promo, hosted numerous shows including Xetas, Hand Out, Permanent Makeup, and, of course, struggled through an ongoing pandemic. The Best of the Bay-winning shop celebrates its tin year with a party featuring shoegaze-grunge act Mrenc plus live art and painting with Josh “Bump” Galletta. The party won’t be as raging as past years, but better than last year because the anniversary didn’t happen in 2020 (thanks to that son a bitch, COVID-19). Ulrey still is being extra-careful with the whole pandemic, so he said, “We’re keeping it light, a mini-party if you will, a truncated celebration.” There won’t be free beer and masks are required inside the store. But plan to do holiday shopping, everything is 10% off. And whatever you do, don’t park at Cappy’s.

Durango, CO | Toast Records and Tapes can help round out your vinyl collection: Shop will be open late for Noel Nite. For some music lovers, vinyl albums have never really gone away. And for a new generation of listeners who are just now discovering the warm sound, the cover art and yes, the smell (especially of old albums), there are plenty of records to be had. In fact, according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s Mid-Year 2021 RIAA Revenue Statistics report, consumers’ investment in vinyl records continues to climb, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. “Vinyl records continued a remarkable resurgence in the first half of 2021. Revenues from vinyl albums grew 94% to $467 million, though the comparison versus the prior year includes a period in which retail stores were significantly impacted by COVID-19, and Record Store Day 2020 was delayed and did not occur in the spring (as it did in 2021),” the report said. It’s not just older acts still pumping out vinyl – artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Adele have albums available on vinyl as well, drawing in younger listeners.

Birkenhead, UK | Birkenhead record shop receives rare John Lennon vinyl gift from Yoko Ono: A Birkenhead record shop has been the lucky recipient of a rare John Lennon release thanks to the former Beatle’s wife and son. Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon have sent out 50 vinyl copies of Happy Xmas (War is Over) to charities and shops across the UK in the hope the record’s sale will generate funds. A note attached to the gifts urged the charities to use the limited edition 12-inch vinyl acetates to “sell, auction [and] raise money”. The one-sided acetate, featuring John and Yoko, was hand-cut on the lathe at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Each edition is stickered and numbered out of 50 and includes a machine printed signature from Yoko, making them hugely collectable. The selected recipients, which include 25 charities and 25 independent record shops, were personally chosen by Yoko and Sean with a note reading: “Happy Xmas.”

The Best of Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

We’re only making plans for Nigel / We only want what’s best for him / We’re only making plans for Nigel / Nigel just needs this helping hand / And if young Nigel says he’s happy / He must be happy / He must be happy in his work…

Written by bassist Colin Moulding of the British new wave band XTC, “Making Plans for Nigel” is a New Wave classic. The song comes from the point of view of a parent. To be honest I can’t really remember making too many “life plans” in my early 20s.

This said, I did make “nightlife plans” daily and I dare say notoriously. As I’m putting together this week’s set I’m procrastinating thinking about how, as we’ve grown older, we tend to always be making serious plans. Ugggh…what a revelation. “What’s your plan?” Every day, with everything.

TVD Radar: Marshall Crenshaw reissue series continues with #447, in stores 2/4

VIA PRESS RELEASE | “I love it that phonograph records are popular again,” enthuses Marshall Crenshaw. “They were consigned to oblivion by the music business back when I was recording for Razor & Tie, but now they’re back!”

The veteran rock ’n’ roll tunesmith, whose beloved body of work encompasses ten studio albums as well as a variety of EPs, compilations and live discs, recently regained ownership of the five acclaimed albums he released on the Razor & Tie label between 1994 and 2003. In 2020, Crenshaw launched a series of ambitious revised editions of those albums, on his own Shiny-Tone label (distributed through Megaforce) on CD, vinyl, and digital on February 4, 2022. The new expanded reissues, all of which include newly recorded bonus tracks, are being released on vinyl, as well as on CD and on all digital platforms.

The reissue series, which began with Crenshaw’s 1996 effort Miracle of Science, now continues with a freshly revised edition of his 1999 set #447, remastered by legendary engineer Greg Calbi. The original 11-song set includes such instant Crenshaw classics as the tongue-in-cheek “Dime a Dozen Guy,” the haunting “Television Light,” the infectious “Tell Me All About It,” and the romantic “T.M.D.” Recorded in the artist’s own home studio as well as Nashville’s Alex the Great studio, #447 features Crenshaw on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion and various vintage keyboards, with additional instrumental contributions from such kindred spirits as Brad Jones, Bill Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Andy York, and former E Street Band member David Sancious.

Graded on a Curve:
White Wizzard,
Flying Tigers

It’s seldom a band releases an album so bad in so many ways all you can do is fling your hat into the air and shout “Huzzah!” Pulling off such an audacious feat requires teamwork, dogged persistence and no small amount of unshakable stupidity. It also helps to have no taste.

One such band is Los Angeles’ White Wizzard. One of the things that makes White Wizzard so wonderfully special is their subject matter, which on their 2011 sophomore effort Flying Tigers includes the lost city of Atlantis, the pyramids, the War of the Worlds, a kid from a far-off galaxy named Starchild, and the Rainbow Bar and Grill in West Hollywood. That’s a lot of ground to cover in less than an hour, but if there’s one thing White Wizzard love it’s a challenge.

One of the most pressing questions about Flying Tigers is whether it’s a concept album. The short answer is yes, with caveats. Nine of the LP’s twelve songs take us to astral and/or demonic realms; the remaining three take us to Los Angeles and Tokyo. How did these outliers make it on to the LP? My guess is they separately creepy-crawled into the studio in the dead of night and accidentally hit record while wrestling for a Snickers bar.

Songs like “Starchild,” “Starman’s Son” (I’m taking it they’re the same person), “War of the Worlds,” “Dark Alien Overture, “Fall of Atlantis,” and “Blood on the Pyramids” lead me to believe that bass player and lyricist Jon Leon has watched every pseudo-documentary about ancient aliens ever made, and believes they’re the gospel truth. Tell him Adolf Hitler traveled to earth via the Jefferson Starship and he’ll ask you if Adolf took any selfies with Grace Slick.

Oshkosh, WI | Oshkosh’s time capsule: The Exclusive Company: The Exclusive Co., located in downtown Oshkosh, creates an old-time atmosphere for music and entertainment lovers to purchase new and used records, DVDs, DJ equipment and much more. “You don’t see many local record stores anymore, and we offer things that you can’t find at Target or Walmart,” said Isaac Lamers, the record store manager. “The store creates a vibe and it is almost like stepping into a different decade.” According to their website, The Exclusive Co. is America’s oldest full-line independent record store. Owner James Giombetti, who died on Nov. 13, was known to many as Mr. G and for his catchphrase, “Say it with me.” Giombetti started his career selling records out of the trunk of his car and at flea markets. He opened the first store in 1956 in West Bend, Wisconsin. He sold records and then slowly expanded his inventory to include other things like turntables, portable audio equipment, TVs and stereo systems.

Northampton, UK | Christmas shopping: Iconic Northampton record store reveals secret behind 21-year success and the ‘desirability’ of vinyl: “A 12″ record sleeve is like a piece of art, a lot of people put them up on their walls. There’s a desirability about them.” An iconic Northampton record store which has been in business for more than two decades is calling on residents to support the High Street this Christmas. In the run up to Christmas, the Chronicle and Echo is celebrating and promoting the best of local businesses in a bid to get more people out shopping locally. The second shop in our coverage is Spun Out record store in Gold Street, which is owned by Chris Kent and has been in business for 21 years now. Chris said: “We started in 2000. We realised there was nothing on the street for young people’s interest, so we started up as a clothing and record shop to have a local focus point for that sort of thing.

San Jose, CA | East Side Record Swap at Mexican Heritage Plaza: Music nerds of all stripes can agree: vinyl is how music is meant to be heard. The gorgeous campus of the East Side’s Mexican Heritage Plaza is set to host a daylong celebration of the most durable format, with a plethora of vendors hawking records across genres, and DJs spinning great hip hop to show the digital natives what’s up. The guest of honor is producer Domino of Bay Area rap legends Hieroglyphics, who will be spinning vinyl himself as well as guesting on a live taping of San Jose’s excellent Dad Bod Rap Pod.

Corpus Christi, TX | Back to Business: Why Hybrid Records is more than music, it’s about community: Owner Carlos Cooper’s vision for his business was for it to become a staple of Corpus Christi. Growing up in the Sparkling City by the Sea, he wanted a record store where people could congregate to discuss music, art and the community. With no business background, Cooper took a risk and opened up his small shop and figured things out as he went. “If I sat too long and thought about it, I’d talk myself out of it at some point,” Cooper said. Knowing his regulars on a first-name basis, he is able to make that connection with the community and help people discover new music they might not have found on their own. “…Hybrid Records. It’s a record store first and then a cultural community hub second. We hope to create an environment where people can gather and discuss all types of art. Plus support the local artist scene.”

TVD Live: Amyl and the Sniffers at the Electric Ballroom 11/24

While the rest of the world is just discovering UK punk sensations and critic’s darlings, IDLES, Amyl and the Sniffers are primed to be the next unexpected force to be reckoned with.

The words Aussie and punk aren’t mentioned very often in the same sentence, so one would wonder how in the hell a punk band from Australia gets it so right. They’ve got the look, the attitude, and now the anthems to boot. With the buzz they have across Europe, and especially how they have been embraced in London, you might even think they were locals.

On the second night of two sold-out gigs at the north London institution The Electric Ballroom, Amyl and the Sniffers brought out both old and new punks. Singer Amy Taylor with her signature look, along with the rest of the band—including the resurgence of the mullet—have certainly impacted the minds of the fans and their fashion sense.

From the DIY outfits to several tributes to Amy’s fringe, to the pissed mates’ in the smoking lounge with their glorified mullets, this isn’t just another gig; it’s a movement. A resurgence of the classic punk look and feel marries perfectly to the aggressive sounds and potent lyrics. It’s as much of a statement as it is a reflection of the public’s appetite for a band that stands for something in a world where people need something to align with. It felt like a trip back in time to the late ’70s when punk ruled London.

TVD Radar: U-Roy, Solid Gold U-Roy 2LP gold vinyl in stores 12/17

VIA PRESS RELEASE | The original version of U-Roy & Jesse Royal’s “Small Axe” can be found on the acclaimed new album, Solid Gold U-Roy, available now via Trojan Jamaica/BMG for streaming and download. Limited Edition 2LP Gold Vinyl will be exclusively available at VP Records retail outlets in Queens, NY and Miramar, FL on December 17, and available for pre-order online via VP Reggae now.

The dub-powered new take on Bob Marley’s classic early hit, “Small Axe” sees the late, great Daddy U-Roy trading big vocals with Kingston, Jamaica-based singer-songwriter Jesse Royal over an indelible riddim that is rich with instrumentation and reverb, yet leaves enough space as to highlight the contrasting deliveries of the singer and deejay, as well as the guitar and piano by Zak Starkey, organ by Robbie Lyn, and fresh backing vocal arrangements courtesy of Robbie Shakespeare, Tony Chin, and Sharna “Sshh” Liguz.

On hearing U-Roy & Jesse Royal’s version of “Small Axe,” legendary producer and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell commented, “I love the unique production sound, it’s “f*cking great!” “It was and always will be an honor and a pleasure to work on U-Roy’s recordings,” says Zak and Sshh. “We miss him, but our mission is to keep his legacy strong with the music that lives on. Jesse Royal gives a stand-out performance with passion and talent that we have come to know from ‘the small axe’. Maximum Respect!”

“We are all from the same bloodline,” says Jesse Royal. “Products of one of the greatest places on Earth! Walking talking blessings. The session for me was a school, as whoever knows me knows that I’m an avid studier when it comes to the ones who set it! The vibrations are always high, as the respect is mutual, and for me the level of gratitude was undeniable! Incredible concept that the team came up with, and brilliant execution by the musical team. Truly honored to be a part of such an amazing project!”
