TVD Recommends: The ILG SXSW Showcase, Thursday, 3/15

We’re delighted to announce that TVD has partnered with Warner’s Independent Label Group (ILG) to co-sponsor (along with Modern Art Records, Bright Antenna, and Black Bell Records) what we’re calling one damn fine SXSW showcase, for next Thursday night at Austin’s Soho Lounge.

On the bill for 3/15 are Miniature Tigers, The Chain Gang of 1974, Geographer, Magic Wands, Secret Music, and Stepdad—all of whom we’ve cornered as a lead up to the showcase for a chat about—right, records.

We chatted on Wednesday with Stepdad and yesterday with Secret Music. Today, Magic Wands joins us who release their debut LP “Aloha Moon” on April 24 via Bright Antenna Records.

“Here are some pictures of 7 of my favorite album covers from records that I have, along with some things that show my feelings about them.”

Steven Halpern – Comfort Zone
This record is as soft as it’s ocean sunset cover and that’s why I included some of Dexy’s pink fur in this picture.

Michael Jackson – 14 Original Greatest Hits with the Jacksons
Still a hot album. Feels fresh from the oven, steaming.

The Three Suns – Twilight Time
Possibly the most romantic album of someone else’s generation, I symbolize this beautiful album with a felt rose and love candy.

Percy Faith and His Orchestra – Magic Moods
The heat gets more hot and pours from the cover of this album. Putting this on with a loved one will have you ready to unwrap whatever stands in your way.

Magnum – Vigilante
Not really a record for listeners, but a classic cover worth a frame. Pink glasses accentuate it’s new age message of “peace on earth.”

Frankie Carle and His Orchestra – Mediterranean Cruise
This is a lifestyle album, mostly about cruising through Europe, on a boat. People do it everyday. Suggested reading could be Masaru Emoto’s “Healing Power of Water.”

Joe Reisman and His Orchestra – Door of Dreams
A lovely cover for a lovely album, the subject of dreams has haunted Magic Wands music since day one, and this dramatic record is an inspiration for love constantly.

“I think the first record I ever got was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I used to take records out of my parents’ collection and trade them for ones I wanted.

I religiously went record shopping in the village of NYC every Saturday for years when I was in high school, I collected UK imports and ’80s new wave records and I”ve been collecting vinyl on and off ever since whenever I find a good record shop.

It’s much more of an experience to be able to hold an album in my hands, look at the artwork, and read the lyrics. For me that’s the magic.”
—Dexy Valentine
